Maui luau question

We will be sailing on RCCL's Serenade of the Seas and are wondering if anyone has gone on either of their tours to the Waikapu Village Luau at the Maui Tropical Plantation or Drums olf the Pacific Deluxe Luau. Or, can anyone recommend another luau and how to get to it without renting a car. Much thanks.

Here are some web sights I found usefull although I haven't sailed yet:

http://adventuremaui.com/luaus.htm

Transportation is the key issue for me. Many recommend retal car but watch the time of the rental car place closing and last shuttle to pier. Overnight parking near the pier may be an option but can be a hassle. Taxi can be expensive. Roberts http://www.mauihawaiiluau.com/outriggerluau.html provides transportation to and from the luau and my email from them today said they usually go to Wailea Marriott Luau. http://www.mauihawaiiluau.com/outriggerluau.html

I don't know how firm the "usually" is.

When we were in Maui in June, we went to the Drums of the Pacific luau. I would not recommend it based on our show and experience. The food was horrible. Not just typical blah luau, but plain BAD. It was dried out, overcooked meat, chewy vegetables, and sauces that were not very good. We were also early in line so it was not because we were getting the end of the line food. The drinks were fair to poor. Most were watered down and the maitais were definitely not good. You would need to drink a bunch to actually say you consumed alcohol.

As for the show, parts were good and parts were very amaturish. Several of the groups did a really good job, especially some of the female dancers. A couple of the male dancers looked lost trying to do the routines, like they were not the usual ones. Which may be the only hope for the show is if they were last minute standins or something and the regulars are back making the show much better. Finally, you are in the courtyard of a hotel, without much scenery around. You basically have the hotel on one side, and a wall with vegetation on the other. You can hear the beach, but not see it. Overall, I would not recommend Drums of the Pacific, but it could have been a bad show given circumstances.

wmbjr: Thanks for the heads up. I've crossed it off our list. There are just so many reviews to read about that it's very confusing to sort out the good from the bad. Drums is obviously one of the bad. Thanks for letting us know.

We leave Tuesday and have booked the Feast at Le Le, we narrowed it down between Old Lahaina and Feast and decided on Feast...Kind of got a different thing though, post cruise, we fly back over to Maui for about a week, so we're going to the luau after the cruise.:)

Here is another option from an earlier post:

"Everyone in our group of 11 thought The Pale Kai Luau was very good. Check in starts

at 4:30. We took a cab that cost around 7 dollars. The lady at check in said they

would have provided transportation but we did not know this. We did not book ours

thru the hotel so maybe that is why. They start the Luau outside with a group picture.

While you are outside games are demostrated. The mc is very good. He is very funny

and interacts with the crowd quite a bit. He breaks a coconut by hand with some

help from the crowd. He also climbs a coconut tree. While they do not have a imu,

they show what one is like. They serve Mai-Tais and punch. Hula demonstrations with

some of the people from the crowd are also done. The whole time that you are outside

you can see the ship in the background which was pretty neat. At 6:00 there is the

call to dinner which is inside the hotel. Dinner is a Hawaiian buffet that includes

fish, chicken, pork and beef. Vegatables were also served along with a salad bar

and pokey and a open bar. At 6:45 was theTahu Productions' Show. Plenty of music

and dancing from the different islands around Hawaii. At 7:45 We were escorted outside

by a torch-led procession, where there were 4 fire dancers. Around 8:15 it was over

and we were given free transpotation back to the ship. We thought it was better

than what we saw at the PCC. However this is the opinion of 11 people and you know

that if you ask 10 people something you may get 8 or 9 different answers. This was

our 1st luau and it served our purpose very well. Another thing we liked was the

size of the crowd. There may have been 125 people instead of 300 to 500.

MAUI BEACH HOTEL Kahului, 877-0051

Pale Kai Luau with four-member fire-knife dance, 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. $69.50 adults, free for children 11 and younger with paying adult.
