Carnival's new karaoke policy...

The difference is the adult comedy shows have numerous warnings about adult content, offensive language, on and on. If they are to allow the obscenities, they would have to start posting that about the karaoke show...think they want to go down that road?

They already do. But I imagine you wouldn't know that since karaoke is one of those things you don't participate in.

You're getting an education, aren't you? ;)

It may not be the case, but you seem to be spending a lot of time worrying about how a shipboard activity you don't even participate in effects those that DO participate in it. It doesn't seem to me that you care that much one way or another regarding policy itself -- you just seem to care that others DO care one way or the other! *LOL*

When we cruised on the Fantasy, the karaoke song list was 80% country music and 15% Elvis. What happened to rock music?

Redneck cruise, redneck music :D

Just a little humor there! Actually, I hope that's not the case on Freedom--I like a bit more diversity. But I have noted that local places around here that feature karaoke are often a little heavy on country. :(

I was on the Carnival Imagination Dec 3rd-8th and I was surprised to see them have a CAVS machine in lieu of CDGs. Normally that would be fine, but they had some sort of 'look-up' system that you had to stand in line for. That can be really annoying as people would sit there and scan the entire catalog (not that is was big) then scan it again... They should have books out there for the people to at least pre-choose their song.

The machine does not allow CDGs to be played at all, so Carnival has fixed what they perceived to be an issue. Additionally, the host didn't really know how to arrange the singing rotation, so however you entered in your song, you sang (if you entered 5 songs at a time, you sang back-to-back (maybe because this ship just came from dry dock and the host was new)...

If they spent the cash on CAVS systems - they should have bought the entire brick of songs as well... alot of those songs were old and stale. Considering how popular the karaoke shows were, it would be a great investment.

It seems to be the case with SM. If I say red, you say blue. If I say black, you say white. Keep the fight going for all of us. Clobber Carnival over the head with the issue, and I'll do the same. As for SM, I think it's hopeless. He just doesn't get it, and probably never will. He's probably never been in a karaoke bar, because it's not even music to him. I always beleived the CDG's I purchase for karaoke were made by professional musicians. I know I've heard PROFESSIONALS sing in karaoke bars. Put the 2 together, and what do you get? Walla! Professional music. Not much different than the guy near the entrace to the casino on the Paradise that sits and plays his guitar with midi files as an accompaniant. Not a professional? I'm sure he thinks he is. Carnival pays him. I think that qualifies him technically as a PROFESSIONAL. The last cruise we were on the Paradise, I heard better voices in the karaoke lounge.

If people are going to be a snob about it, just stay away, and miss all the fun and the occassional professional that steps up to the mic with a phenomenal voice and surprises everyone.

I certainly have had many people come up to me to complement me, and ask to do certain requests. I can't hit the range of keys I used to when I was a young PROFESSIONAL in a band, but I always try to accommodate their request when possible. Limited to the ship's play list, it will be less possible.

Look forward to us cruising with you again. See you all on the Pradise in May.

Yep...(having sailed it 3 times since last Dec) I can tell you that a rendition of Down At the Twist and Shout by Mary Chapin Carpenter will get them on their feet!!!!

Thanks for pointing that out. All the folks that rag on people singing to "CDGS" are the same folks that call the soloist a "professional" when he is using the same format....pre-recorded music!!!!! (just strumming a guitar along with it or hitting a few chords on the keyboard)

I also had to laugh at that last line. Most of the soloist on the Promenade are excellent and several are friends of mine...but one (who I will not name because he is a good acquaintance and I would not hurt his feelings for the world) can't get through a whole song without MANY (and I do mean most sometimes) off notes. Hubby and I both have wondered how in the world he got hired by Carnival...because he just can't sing. (and yes, he uses midis as well)

Well great. Thanks for the warning....that is where we are spending our next B2B this month...on the Imagination! Oh well...I survived laryngitis on one cruise and did not get to sing at all...I will survive this!!!

Someone gave you false info involving CAVS. It plays CDG's as well as the SCD'S it was designed for. The reverse is not possible. SCDG's have to be run on CAV machines. I run CDG's on my CAV all the time. CAV USA can be downloaded from the CD, put into a text file, converted to an EXCEL document, sorted andprinted. Many of the SCDG's contain over 1200 songs. Problem is, scratch a disc and you're screwed. They have a more advanced system that will load the disc on a hard drive, problem solved. Those players run about $2000, but I think Carnival can afford it. They had CAV on the Freedom, but the host didn't even know what it was. All she had was CDG's to play.

CAV constantly puts out new discs that carry as few as a couple hundred songs up to 1234. I believe they even have a monthly update of hits available. Some karaoke purists think the quality of the music is sub-standard to other brands, but it's a very objective issue.

Carnival would be wise to equip all of its vessels with the top end CAV, or similar Jukebox equipment, and standardize the ships on one format.Continue to play the participant's CDG's and make for a better karaoke experience company wide. Hire me and I'll advise them how to accomplish it. Running karaoke for the fleet they have should be a full time job. I'm not sure 1 person could accomplist it. Whoever is doing it now sure doesn't know how to get the job done.

The next host you have that tells you they can't play CDG's on CAV, ask them to at least stick it in and try. And no, it would screw up the equipment.

I good arguement for being allowed to bring your own CD's. Complain to Carnival.

Here my input on the subject. First of all, I DO NOT sing. But I would rather go to listen to Kareoke (however you spell it!) than go to one of the shows in the showrooms. At least the people singing "K" don't pretend to be "real" singers like they do in the showrooms. I have yet to hear a GOOD singer in the showrooms. But I have heard some good "K" singers! And some not so good, but they were having fun, and so was I! Isn't that what it's all about? Having FUN? So....to those who sing, keep singing!! This is a place where we can get together, meet some great people, hear some music, and just have fun!! :) :D

Good point! On our last cruise, I was appalled by the soloist on the Promenade. He couldn't remember words with them printed infront of him and I would guess his correct notes were even worse. I normally love listening to guitar but I could not stay there! I said to my DH "Who hired this guy!"

And DANCE...don't forget dance. I love it when people get up and dance when I am singing but sometimes it seems to take a prodding to get them on the floor!!!

That is good to know. The other good news is that we just happen to have (not one but) TWO professional KJs sailing with us on our Roll Call !!! YEAH!!!!! There may be hope yet!!! :D

Man... I did forget the dancing! I love it. Especially if the person singing is a little nervous, and needs encouragement!:D

I have never been to a karaoke bar, but I do have a system at home, which we use A LOT! I would never have the guts to get up there and sing, I sound terrible, so I'll keep my voice within my walls. BUT I will FOR SURE check out the karaoke on our next cruise. This thread has convinced me to do just that! Thanks!

Absolutely. And remember that (except for the Fantasy and Holiday) the karaoke player has key control...so if you need the song up or down a key or two....they can do it!!!

Most of the time when people say they "can't sing" .... it is simply a matter of getting the song in the right key.

I can't sing Faith Hill's "Like We Never Loved Before" in the original key. But take it down 3 and LOOK OUT!!!!

LOL... It took a lot for me just to start singing at home in front of anyone other than my husband! Now I don't care, most of the time. I listened to a lot of music back in the day, and know words to a lot of songs, but when I heard myself sing, it was like "YIKES" .... Anyhoo, I will definitely check it out in March! Yay, I have something new to look forward to!:D

Is there someway you can blow up the size of your picture. My wife says I'm going to hurt my eyes squinting trying too see you in that 2 piece. She tells me I'm like a dog chasing a car. I'm too old and slow to catch it, and if I did, I wouldn't know what to do with it.

Just having fun. Thanks for the response. There are some really mediocre performers in the shows and lounges that call themselves professionals. Carnival actually does a pretty good job hiring good people, but it has to be tough to get people to sign on to sail around for a year or longer, live in small quarters, work every day, be away from friends and family for extended periods of time, and be talented. Fortunately for us, there are people that have a passion for performing, and take these jobs to do what they love. Wish I was younger. I'd love to have a second chance to take a shot at it. To this day, I love the adrenaline rush I get when I'm in front of an audience. Weird, huh?
