chrob Posted September 12, 2004 #1 Share Posted September 12, 2004 We want to fly to the Artic Circle for a couple of days whilst based in Anchorage. Any recomendations on tours/tour companies to use.
Budget Queen Posted September 13, 2004 #2 Share Posted September 13, 2004 The "Arctic circle" is just a sign on the Haul Road. :) (from the ground) WHERE do you want to go for a few days?? My recomendation would be Barrow. As there are some activities there. I flew into Coldfoot a couple weeks ago for a look at the fires- expansive. chrob Posted September 13, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted September 13, 2004 It is Barrow we want to go. We are considering the options at the moment. i.e. should we fly from Calgary to Barrow and spend a couple of nights there taking in a local trip or fly Calgary to Anchoridge and take a day/overnight trip there. We would love to see Polar bears and the Northern Lights but fear we will be too early for both in early August. What else would you recommend to see/do in Barrow? Is the KingEider hotel the best place to stay?
goodman Posted September 14, 2004 #4 Share Posted September 14, 2004 Look into tours by Northern Alaska Tour Company. We did a three day tour from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay and back. Two days by van to Prudhoe Bay and then flew back. There is an extension to Barrow. Our tour leader was terrific. Don't know about going from Anchorage. Call them and talk to them or look on the internet. They were a good company to work with. Really enjoyable. Probably won't see polar bears or Northern lights, though. Budget Queen Posted September 14, 2004 #5 Share Posted September 14, 2004 You need later for northern lights and polar bears- although the bears are there. I would not go to Barrow on a tour and arrange something privately instead- allow 2 over nights if you change your dates so to allow more time for wildlife. chrob Posted September 14, 2004 Author #6 Share Posted September 14, 2004 Thanks for ther advice. We will probably fly there from Calgary and then fly down to Anchoridge. Are there particular tours you can book from Barrow? Any opinions on the KingEider Hotel?
Budget Queen Posted September 15, 2004 #7 Share Posted September 15, 2004 The King Elder is a basic hotel, lower your expectations here. It's rough around the edges, but clean and has a helpful staff. I packed up a lot of my own food up, budget double- triple what you would at home in Barrow. chrob Posted September 15, 2004 Author #8 Share Posted September 15, 2004 Is there anywhere else to stay in Barrow that is better than the King Eider?
Budget Queen Posted September 16, 2004 #9 Share Posted September 16, 2004 There is Top of the World, probably about the same. :)
