Port side?

I read somewhere that Port side rooms are better than Starboard side rooms. Is this true? Why? Also... please confirm for this newbie that Port is actually the left side of the ship as you are facing the front...

Only if you are sailing Alaska in Glacier Bay??? Otherwise it doesn't matter what side you are on.

yes port side is left someone on the ship told me to remember that the words left and port both have 4 letters and it was easiest way to remember...it worked!!
