bondscruisegal Posted January 8, 2008 #1 Share Posted January 8, 2008 Will be in Kahului Maui from 8 am to 9:30 pm. I would like to take the Haleakala Crater tour (4 hours) and also Lahaina On Your Own. Has anyone done both of these on the same day. Or does anyone have any info on transportation (other than renting a car) between Kahului and Lahaina.
Angsa Posted January 9, 2008 #2 Share Posted January 9, 2008 We went to Lahaina by public bus from Kahului. We took a free shuttle from the pier to Queen Ka'ahumanu Centre then took the bus from there to Lahaina. It costs $1 per person only, it is hourly and departs Queen Ka'ahumanu Centre at every half hour. It also returns at every half hour. Journey time a little less than 1 hour. It is not the most convenient way but definitely the cheapest.
Bill S Posted January 9, 2008 #3 Share Posted January 9, 2008 A number of years ago in August, we did almost this exact thing. We flew from Oahu in the morning, rented a car at the airport and then drove to Lahaina. We strolled around there for a couple of hours and then drove up to Haleakala for the afternoon. After spending some time up there, we drove back to the airport for our early evening flight back to Honolulu. All in one day and we didn't feel pushed at all. The Haleakala crater was in the clouds and we could not see a whole lot. That is when we were told that the mornings are the best time to see Haleakala.
