all you can eat lobster and crab

In a posting I read a few months back (either here or on another website) Celebrity has an all you can eat king crab and lobster night. I have not found this info anywhere else and think it might not be true. Has anyone come across this because that would be fun!

I have to chuckle when I read posts about “Lobster” night on cruise ships. It seems that to some this is a really big deal and is a much anticipated dining event. I have been on many cruise ships and several lines and have yet to have a lobster tail that is really fit to eat. All cruise lines serve some type of very small previously frozen lobster tails that are overcooked in mass and in most cases not really fit to eat. I have heard many cruisers complain about not being able to have served more than 1 lobster tail and how it “ruined” their cruise experience. Go to Red Lobster and for about $12 you can have the same previously frozen lobster tail and it will be most likely cooked and taste better than anything you will get on a cruise. Do not get me wrong I do enjoy a good lobster, but only if it comes from a cold water region like Maine and is cooked live less than 12 hours after being caught in the wild, all other lobsters are such a disappointment. On our last cruise in November on the Volendam on the "Surf and Turf" night I was the only one who bypassed the S &T for the Rack of Veal Roast at our table of 6. You should have heard the complaints from my tablemates about the small, (maybe 2 bites) tough lobster tail and the small over cooked fillets. One person said they would never sail on HAL again because the lobster and fillet was so poor in quality. :eek: However, I will have to say my Rack of Veal was probably the best entre I had on the 10 day cruise and one of the best veal dishes I have had in many years.:p

Celebrity does not have an "all you can eat" seafood night. Lobster tails are usually offered as one of the main entree's on the last formal night.

 

On our last cruise (Infinity to Alaska 07/07) we were fortunate enough to have the pleasure of dining at the Captains Table on the last formal night. The lobster served that evening was the best "restaurant" lobster I have ever had, not overcooked, big, plump and juicy.

 

That was our first Celebrity cruise, so I'm not sure if the quality of the lobster that was served to the mass populous was as good as our or if it had something to do with our seating location that evening.

I love veal but surprisingly have never ordered rack of veal. How is it prepared?

 

It was cooked like a prime rib and served like a rack of lamb chop about 1½ inch thick. Basically if you have had veal chops it is the same thing but cooked as a roast of veal. It was the first time I have had veal cooked this way and I was very impressed.:D :D :D

The Captain's table is situated at the very back on the main floor of the dining room right beside the tall wall of windows that looks over the ships quake. It is an oval shaped table, and that evening there were five couples and the Hotel Manager. All of the couples that evening were sailing in Royal Suites except for one, they were in a Sky Suite.

 

I have read on these boards that the reason you recieve an invitation to the Captain's Table varies. I would suggest, to increase your chances, to find and introduce yourself to the CC Hostess as she has a great influence as to who gets invited.

 

It was a very nice evening. We were invited to the Martini Bar for cocktails prior to dinner where we were introduced to our table mates for the evening. Once most people are seated, you are escorted from the Martini Bar to the Captain's table where you are pampered by the best servers, and of course everything is gratis including all cocktails, wine etc.

 

After cappucino's and dessert we were all invited back to the Martini Bar by the Hotel Manager for nightcaps and cognacs.

 

We didn't make it back to our room until 2 AM that evening...

Lobster has varied considerably in quality and taste.

 

It has never been promoted as all you can eat, however, as with any dining room dish, I've never seen them deny requests for seconds. In fact most of the time, for the lobster dish, the waiters will offer seconds and sometimes bring extras to the table without even asking first. We'll frequently get another dish, usually beef offered that night, and ask the waiter to bring one lobster tail for my wife and me to share in order to make our dinner "surf and turf".
