cruising with a teen and pre-teen

We just got back from a Disney cruise and loved that. We are starting to think about another cruise, probably for my DD graduation from high school in a couple of years. By then she will be 17 and DS will be 11 (almost 12).

We plan on a 5-7 day cruise to warm weather (probably caribbean) - but have no preference for ports (we have not really been to any of them). Our schools let out early so we are thinking the last week of May.

Also, we were fine on the Disney with one cabin - not that crowded, so we are thinking about getting one cabin if it is comparable size (newer ships seem to be except for RCCL, which seems tiny).

In general, what ships/cuiselines do you recommend for teens and pre-teens? What was your experience (or your child's experience)? What did they like and did not like?

What should be pay attention to as we start to look at ships, what are the questions we should ask?

Thanks!

We have done a NCL cruise and hated it...the kids program was almost none existent. Last year we did a Princess cruise Diamond Princess on the Mexican Rivera and LOVED it!! Our 15 year old son had a wonderful time with the teens he met through the teen center.

We liked that the TC was very well run and the staff seemed to really enjoy their jobs. We have booked for the Carribbean Princess this coming Oct and our now 16 year old son wanted to come so badly that he is paying his own flight and cruise to come with us!!

That said, I hear RCL has an incredible teens and kids camp too!

We've been on Carnival once and are going again next month. Our first trip was when our girls were 13 and 10 and the size of the cabin was perfect. Our kids loved the programs. We picked Carnival this second time because theirs is the only cruise line that didn't have our girls in the same age category(they don't still don't like hanging out together at 16 and 13:p ). We also did a Disney cruise and we found the cabin sizes were very comparable, except Carnival doesn't have a separate toilet and shower.

Like you our first cruise was Disney--but our guys were like 5 and 8 ish

Last year we cruised Carnival Miracle for a week--west carrib.

The boys were 10 and 13...the camps which they enjoyed were good and they enjoyed the water slide.

We just finished an 11 night cruise with Celebrity--southern carrib-aruba, cartagena, panama etc --which the almost 12 and almost 15 yr olds enjoyed.

..but no water slide and the avg age of the pax was older--

but

the ship was only 2100 pax and the service was great...plenty of space, 250 kids total and more than half of the ship was from europe and the other large part were from outside the US--The US pax was probably 25%..we liked the international mix.

If we cruise again I think we might consider a new Carnival ship...with the water slide and large teen club etc

...we have thought of doing a RCCL but being with 3-4,000 people is overwhelming --we still may try them though..

hope you get some replies from more in the know

good luck
