Why do you people do this?

Why, after so many people say they LOVE dressing up for formal nights, does everyone change back into their regular clothes as SOON as they are done with dinner, like it's a race or something? I personally like to enjoy the rest of my evening in my pretty clothes, and I don't feel like changing that many times a day. Hubby thinks otherwise, but I force him. Needless to say, I feel out of place because everyone else is so casual and we're walking around formal. Would it really kill you to wear a dress or suit for a few more hours? Modern society is just not classy anymore like it was back in the day!! People then would dress formally all the time, especially on a cruise, and now it seems to kill people after about 2 hours tops! Opinions?

I hate to dress up.

Does it really matter what people do? People want to enjoy the cruise and will do so however they choose.

Also, how do you know all of those people that do dress up love it? This board is only a cross section of people that cruise. I suspect a lot of people dress up because carnival requests it (count me in there) and then go casual as soon as they can.

I must be classless since I'm more comfortable in casual clothes.

I agree Kevin. I will dress up for formal night. However I am much more relaxed in jeans and a T-shirt. That's WHY Im on the cruise. To be relaxed. I know some would rather stay dressed up all night and that's fine with me. But for me as soon as dinner is 3/4 over off comes the tie....lol

I will dress for dinner because that is how they ask me to dress. I like dressing up but also like being comfortable. Wearing heels for a night is not going to happen. I'll admire your dress if you don't look down at me in my casual clothes:)

I love to dress up for formal nights! I always stay in my formal attire until the wee hours of the night (ok...Wee hours of the morning).....It's fun and I don't get the chance to dress up all that often so I take advantage of it! :D

I've read enough on these threads that say MOST people enjoy dressing up. But then why do they call it "formal NIGHT" why not just formal "HOUR?" And since it is formal NIGHT, if you hate it so much, why take a cruise? Or why not just eat elsewhere that night? If there was something I hated or felt forced to do, I wouldn't do it! (Unless it was mandatory like a job duty). If I hated so badly putting on formal clothes for 1-2 nights (Oh the HORROR!) I just wouldn't cruise because I know that's part of a cruise!

Who calls it formal night?

And why does any of this bother you?

Well I certainly don't cruise just for the formal night...that's for damn sure. Sometimes I like to stay dressed up and sometimes I don't. No one is being forced to dress up.......and those that don't like to stay in their formal wear shouldn't have to...or be questioned about it either..MHO

Hi, I hope my post finds you in good spirits.

On my previous (2) cruises, I've remained dressed to the nines. Why? 'Cuz I feel like it. I've attended shows, karaoke and the dance club while still dressed from formal nights. I enjoy getting all dolled up...heels and all. :o I also don't mind the admiring looks I receive from other passengers as well as their compliments. And, I really don't care if others are still dressed formally or not. I am on my cruise to enjoy it how I like...as they are, too. So, wear your formal attire proudly!! Who cares if no else does?!

FYI: My fiance remained dressed in his tux (oh, la, la!! :D ) and didn't complain because he knows how much I enjoy dressing up. It's fun!! My female travel buddy on our girls cruise stayed dressed as well cuz she is girly like me. I would have been perfectly fine if either wanted to change afterwards; however, my fiance knows remaining in his tux after dinner makes me oh so happy...and he will reap the rewards later for being such a good sport. ;)

Happy sailing,

T.

I've said this before....what does it matter if the other people are dressed up or not? Usually I dress up, then because I'm sunburned I'm super uncomfortable in heels and a dress. Formal night is for dinner...or they would advertise it in the capers that it's formal night at the bars. Wear what you want!

You are obviously on the wrong cruise line. There are others that may better suit you.

We dress up just for photos. We always change after dinner.

So what about the people that do eat elsewhere. Should they be banned from the lounges and bars because it would make you feel out of place:rolleyes:

We're with you on this one darlin'. DW & I don't get much of a chance to dress up in real life, so we do it up good when on a cruise. We always go to the cabin a couple hours early and take our time getting ready. We usually have a bottle of bubbly while getting ready and when it's time, we strut our stuff. And we strut it all night. We've only changed once after dinner and that's only because formal night was the last night. I keep my tie on all night too. I just bought a real tux and I'm going to wear it! This cruise we're sailing with DS & BIL, they have a mini suite, hence larger bl. So we're going to be going to their bl for some wine and pics before dinner. On our last cruise our tablemates thought that the buffet was a better deal, and only showed up once at our table. On formal night we saw them near the casino wearing, sweats.

Also we never feel out of place, even if everyone around has changed. I'd love to show you the pic of DW & a new friend doing the cancan in the piano lounge on formal night, but it's blurry at best. Where ever you cruise, always take part in formal nights, and have fun with it. Try my thing, go to the cabin early and have some bubbly, or whatever while getting ready.

Well, even if we ate elsewhere that night, we'd still be in jeans and a t-shirt by the time others were done formal dinner, so I guess some wouldn't even know whether the other passengers changed or not. I certainly don't go on a cruise FOR formal night. I get dressed for formal night, when we do decide to go to the dining room, but always change because I'm typically pretty uncomfortable in my shoes. And I have never really been a "dressy" gal. But still seeing the beautiful ladies dressed up after dinner is long over is nice too. To each his own. It doesn't bother me one bit regardless what anyone does on the cruise as long as it's not intrusive to other passengers.

I usually change after dinner because I can't stand wearing high heels any longer (thanks to bad feet) or I'm freezing in my formal dress.

Normally because I'm freezing, LOL. I love my formal dress and my DH loves it on me, but both of us enjoy getting into comfy clothes after dinner if we're going to the piano bar or the disco or the shows. That's just us. It doesn't mean we enjoy getting dressed up any less, it's just the way we're more comfy.

Who cares if you're more dressed up than everyone else? Better to be overdressed than under!
