Scuba - Jamaica

Looking for feedback on scuba diving in Jamaica. We have been told it's not all that great and would like to hear from others. Can you compare the diving here to other popular cruise ports?

 

Wondering if this may be one stop on our itinerary we look for a different activity. Posted this under the Jamaica topic heading and no responses. Appreciate the input......

I'm pretty sure the general consensis is that diving in Jamaica while on a cruise is probably not worth the time/money involved.

 

Personally, I'd be unlikely to go on a cruise that stopped there unless I got an extremely good deal on the fare, and even then, I'd probably stay on the ship.

We generally avoid stops in Jamaica also. My husband and daughter did the horseback ride through the water there once and enjoyed it. Don't know anybody who thought the diving there was worth it.

I was certified in Negril, Jamaica. It is a 3 hour drive from Montego Bay. I'd estimate it is 6 or 7 hours from Ochos Rios. I've been told that the diving in Negril is better than Ochos Rios and I can tell you that Negril is okay, just okay.

 

Bottom line, I'd probably do a shore excursion or stay on the ship rather than scuba dive in Ochos Rios. If you haven't been to Jamaica I'd recommend the Dunn's Rivers Falls.

The water is merky at best. Don't waste your time and money. Dive Cozumel if you get a chance.
