Best sushi in Oahu/big Island

If you are coming by ship to Kona...I can think of 2 places off the top of my head within walking distance. The first one is just about a block up the street in the King Kamehameha Mall. There is a sushi restaurant right there at the entrance. I'm sorry, I don't know the name. It is wonderful!! They really care about their product there so if you want to take some to go, be prepared for a lecture on how it is best eaten right after they make it.

Another is called Wasabe and it is in the Coconut Grove center just past where Lava Java is, behind the volleyball court. I only ate there when they first opened but it was really good and I have heard that they are still really good.

We actually have many around, but those are right near the pier.

Aloha,
Emi

Thanks Emi!

Actually, it will be a land trip for us this time. We will be driving from Kona to Hilo (3days total in the big Island) and then fly to Oahu for 2 days.

Maybe something in the Hilo side?

Hmmmm...I just don't know the Hilo side very well. And Spleen says the best restaurants are over here...lol! I know I've heard of one there but I just can't remember what the name was or where it is.

Back to Kona... There is a Japanese Rest just south of Kona called Teshima's. They are very good. She always gives us fresh sushi (not sashimi) when we sit down. I'm not positive that this is done for everyone though. I believe they are closed on Mondays.

Aloha,
Emi

Hmmm...maybe Spleen can answer better. I am spoiled from living in Japan so I have found all sushi here to be disappointing so far. I should say, the rolls have been great...but the nigri sushi...well....

There's a great Japanese restaurant called Yanagi Sushi on Kapiolani Blvd. On the pricey side, but yummy. The Zippy's in Kahala also has a sushi bar which is reasonable and they are generous with their slices. But Suebee's right, there's no comparison to Japan!

As my wife mentioned above ...

Otherwise, some other options include Yohei Sushi near Dillingham Blvd and Maguro-Tei in Kaimuki. And the aforementioned Hakone restaurant in the Hawaii Prince has a fantastic sushi buffet where nigiri is made to order and is really good (I should find out one of these days if the Entertainment book coupon is usable for this).

Suebee - we should take you guys to the Zippy's Pearl City location - they have the same sushi bar that the Zippy's Kahala has that ahibunny mentioned. Well worth the price.

I remember watching a man making sushi in Japan with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. Shows the difference. Well...that was about 10 years ago, so maybe they've changed that.

Getting hungry now...

And all this time I thought the ash flecks on my sushi was furikake! Silly of me. LOL

Spleen, We'll have to give zippys a try.

The Hakone coupon in the entertainment book is for an entree. Now whether there is a sushi plate in the entree section, I dont know. But the coupon has a value of $36 so you can get the main lobster for two and pay only $34!

We'll be out your way tomorrow (beach day...its been so long)....sushi for lunch?

Yeah....hubby's never been! I like it because the kids can play in the water and I can relax a little because there are no waves or undertow.

Weather's a little off today - sort of sunny sometimes and sort of cloudy. Should still be a good time at the beach. If you get a chance, walk through the Marriott there - very nice hotel.

Spleen - youre right! I am now home. We didnt walk through Marriot but should. Roys is opening this summer over there, I am sure you know.
The weather was fine.....sunny with occasional clouds...perfect for me. I would rather not have 100% sun as it gets too hot.

Roy's was supposed to open up earlier this year - around March or so. They're taking their time.
