asdfjean Posted February 18, 2008 #1 Share Posted February 18, 2008 Is it true there is no ATM on board? We're on Norwegian Pearl. Travelers checks seem pretty outdated, so guess we'll bring a bunch of cash, including lots of $1's and keep it in the mini safe. Also, anybody know if tennis rackets/ balls are supplied for use on the tennis court?
cb at sea Posted February 18, 2008 #2 Share Posted February 18, 2008 We never use the ATM's--we just bring more cash than we think we'll need, and take it home if we don't spend it! (the bank doesn't care if we re-deposit it!) Why pay to access your own money? We don't bring lots of small bills, as they are too "bulky"--large bills can be changed on the ship for smaller bills! Reduces the size of the "wad" you'll be carrying!
paul929207 Posted February 18, 2008 #3 Share Posted February 18, 2008 Even if there is an ATM on the ship, I would not bet the ranch on it. You never know when it will stop working.

Also, anybody know if tennis rackets/ balls are supplied for use on the tennis court? a little story---a friend went to mexico a few years back...he was asked, 'are you taking travlers checks'? NO I LIKE CASH!! the first night there---wallet, cash etc. in an old style fanny pack---2 guys on a scooter rode by and cut and grabbed the bag...he has 15 stitches as a reminder...without any money and no one at home to wire him any---they flew home the next day....'DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THEM'. is still great advise!!! set your budget...get a couple hundred dollars in 20's...use them at the resturants in port...duty free shops, etc....credit cards for onboard charges of course...REMEMBER IF YOU NEED TO CASH A TRAVLERS CHECK 'BEFORE YOU GET OFF THE SHIP...THE PURSER'S OFFICE WILL GLADLY DO IT FOR YOU....WE ARE LEAVING FROM NEW JERSEY, FLYING TO SAN JUAN A DAY AHEAD OF OUR CRUISE NEXT MONTH...7 DAYS ON THE ADVENTURE OF THE SEAS....I WILL HAVE MY I'D., CREDIT CARD, TRAVLERS CHECKS, AND AT THE MOST....$100 IN CASH. AND WE HAVE BUDGETED $2500 TO SPEND DURING THE WEEK ON GIFTS, SPA TREATMENTS, ETC. MY BANK GAVE US AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVLERS CHECKS FOR 'NO FEE'...OH, ONE MORE THING....IF BY SOME CHANCE YOU LOOSE YOUR WALLET AND MONEY....THOSE OUT DATED TRAVLERS CHECKS WILL BE REPLACED THE VERY NEXT PORT, WITH A CASH ADVANCE FROM ROYAL CARIBBEAN AS A COURTESY TO AMERICAN EXPRESS......MY QUESTION? 'WHY WOULD YOU CARRY LOTS OF CASH'?????????????????????????...
clackey Posted February 18, 2008 #5 Share Posted February 18, 2008 We took travelers checks on our first couple of trips and got them cashed at the Pursers desk. Now we take cash in large bills and get them changed into small bills at the PD before we hit the ports.
JoKen1 Posted February 18, 2008 #6 Share Posted February 18, 2008 I took about $300 in cash and then I just used my debt/Visa for all purchases on shore. I came home with cash left over.
montekat Posted February 18, 2008 #7 Share Posted February 18, 2008 You can get cash against your Sail & Sign, SeaPass, etc. card at the Purser's desk or the casino. If you use the Casino, just tell them you are going to play the slots. Some cruiselines charge a fee to get this cash, others don't. It's probably still cheaper than the ATM's. BeachBumMama Posted February 19, 2008 #8 Share Posted February 19, 2008 There most likely will be an ATM just outside the casino door (for your easy convenience:p ), but the fees are high. I want to say around $5.00? There are ATM's in most ports also.

Can you use cash in the casino or must it be charged to your sign and sail card..:p
montekat Posted February 19, 2008 #10 Share Posted February 19, 2008 Can you use cash in the casino or must it be charged to your sign and sail card..:p They are more than happy to take your cash! If you want to get extra cash, then you could charge it to your Sail & Sign card.
BeachBumMama Posted February 19, 2008 #11 Share Posted February 19, 2008 Can you use cash in the casino or must it be charged to your sign and sail card..:p Yes, as the above poster said, they are more than happy to TAKE your cash. This is about the only place on the ship that deals with the deposit of your cash.:p
cv322 Posted February 19, 2008 #12 Share Posted February 19, 2008 Can you use cash in the casino or must it be charged to your sign and sail card..:p YES YOU CAN :p!! I ONLY use cash in the Casino...IMHO it's way too easy to lose track of what you're betting if you put it on your sail & sign card. I always do a withdrawal at my bank prior to cruising, specifically for casino spending, and then deposit any winnings when we return. That way I bet with a specific budget that I'm prepared to lose... if that's the way the cookie crumbles. But I've sometimes been lucky on the ships! Good luck to you too! :D

You may feel very comfortable with traveler's checks. However, they are generally IMPOSSIBLE to cash in certain areas of the world-South America and Asia particularly. So they are not the be-all, end all to solve cash problems. Local ATM's are usually a better option.

However, they are generally IMPOSSIBLE to cash in certain areas of the world-South America and Asia particularly. So they are not the be-all, end all to solve cash problems. Local ATM's are usually a better option.we are talking about taking travelers checks on a caribbean cruise ship!!! as opposed to taking LARGE wads of cash......in my--afraid to loose my cash--humble opinion, any thing is better than traveling with LARGE wads of CASH....so the point isn't whether travelers checks are the 'BE-ALL'... THE QUESTION IS WHY WOULD 'ANYONE' TAKE LARGE WADS OF CASH ON A VACATION.....? MY POINT IS THAT ATM'S, CREDIT CARDS, ADVANCE PAYMENTS, ALL-INCLUSIVE'S---ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN TAKING LARGE WADS OF CASH ON A VACATION......JUST SO YOU'LL KNOW----IF AND WHEN SOMEONE LOST THAT LARGE WAD OF CASH---I WOULD TRY TO FIND THEM AND RETURN IT.....BECAUSE I'M SURE THEY ARE LIKE ME.....'PEOPLE WHO CAN'T AFFORD TO LOOSE THEIR MONEY WHILE ON VACATION'.
