Hard of Hearing

FAD

Recommended Posts

In the past I’ve had very little success obtaining Assistive Listening Devices (for Hard of Hearing People) with Royal Caribbean and no success with Celebrity so last week I cruised on the Crown Princess.

The Crown has two theaters. The Princess Theater has an infared system; the Explorer Lounge has nothing. The Princess Theater uses Sennheiser equipment which is too weak for my severe hearing loss and is susceptible to static interference. It was a dud.

I think that my cruise days are done. Too much socializing and laughter that I can't share.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope you have complained to the cruise lines you mentioned about it. I am on a Celebrity cruise right now (sitting in the Casino on Summit with my laptop) so I will mention it to them too.

Sorry to hear that nothing has changed. On the last 2 cruises we got a door knocker and tty but no assistive listeng device. We re going on RCI Explorer next month and are hoping it will be better. We were told they fad the theater wired but did not think to ask details.

Go over to the HAL board - there is a lively discussion going on over there about all us hard of hearing or deaf folks.

I began the thread just to point out what HAL does for the HOH on board. It's turned into a group hug:) :) !! It's great - people with hearing loss or living with those will feel very welcome!! Your problems ARE understood.

didn't know about all this. DH woke up one morning fully deaf in one ear, partly deaf in the other. It's been very upsetting for him and of course crowds and loud noises make hearing impossible. I'm fine most of the time though I can't hear well with loud machines or noises either. now that the last kid is in college I blast the tv. (g)

Thanks for the link to the discussion.

I made a post over on the HAL thread, but I want to post here, since it's more relevant. I'll be sailing with RCI this summer - my first cruise - and my travel agent mentioned on the phone to RCI that I was hearing impaired. They immediately faxed a form for me to fill in, asking if I wanted a TTY, bed shaker, alarm or interpreter. So you are saying they just fail to provide them after they are asked?

I will make sure to post back after my cruise to let you all know how I made out. My biggest thing is not being able to hear things over the loudspeaker, and needing my husband or daughters available to help me. I hate feeling helpless and needing to rely on everyone else.

HEllo I am hard of hearing. I ask you not to give up, this is someway you can find out to get what you need. I am goingto ask you some qustions please do nto feel defend. If you do, I am sorry.

FIrst of all have you ever tried Deaf Cruise? there was one last Fall in Oct RCI it was Freedom of the Seas, IT was over 3500 hard of hearing and deaf on the ship. THere was interprters and among other need assistance. It was awsome, very successful

Have you gone to Travel Agent at all? I can give you the travel agent but is out of our state but we use that. Reason They are responsible for set up the Deaf cruise.

There is another was coming up on August 16, 2009 Mexican Rivera. There are other cruise as well but those will have like half of the ship or maybe 300 or 500 people going on ship. I know in Sept 2008 is Alaska, there is another small group approx like 300 going Mexican RIvera in Oct of this year, and there is one Hawaiann this fall too.

The one in Aug 2009 is Marienr of the Seas August 16 thru 23 this ship is booked for only Deaf and hard of hearing. The agent is Passaager Deaf TRavel. These people have good relationship with RCI.

If you want me to sent you some information, let me know. or you can vp me or email. I can give you some websites too. WHich ever you feel comty. AGAIN DO NOT GIVE UP!!!!

Hi codyboy...I think a big problem is a lot of people on here might be deaf but they are not Deaf, know what I mean? I have not seen a lot of people on Cruise Critic who know ASL...and that is what the Deaf cruise mostly has. I would love to go on the Deaf cruises myself though!

YEs that is true, I myself is not a great sign language at all but now alot yes but great deal no. My husband is deaf tho as he grew up since 5 at the WI School for the Deaf. I grew up in mainstream.

When I was on the cruise last Oct. there were hearing people who have sposues that are deaf or hard of hearing. FYI if you want I be happy to sent you the information on the website and travel agent to you. Or you can just email anytime. rthompson47@wi.rr.com We already paid for our cruise next year. I know there are pro and cons for all of us. The only person who can judge what makes them comfortable is YOU. SMILE....

I do wish you the luck what you decided to do. :o Chilly here in WISC.
