How Does AYWD Work On First Night?

From other threads about AWYD I read that you can make reservations by calling in the morning for that evening's meal.

But how are we to be seated on the very first night. Does everyone just go down and wait??

When you first board your ship, head to the dining room and ask for a reservation for that evening.

ASWD information will be either in items you receive when boarding or on the desk in your cabin. Reservations are made by phone. They only take reservations for early and late time slots. The early ones on the Ryndam were both before six (maybe 5:30 & 5:45, can't recall for sure). The later ones were, I think, eightish. Reservations are held for 15 minutes. You can arrive anytime during the dinner hours, but just can't reserve except for the earlier or later time slots. Many people don't reserve and seem to do fine.

That's what we did every night and there was no wait. Your mileage may vary.

There is no way to predict how many passengers want to dine at the same time as you do or how many want private tables versus a willingness to share. In this way, there are far more similarities between fixed and open seating where lots of people do not get the fixed time, table size or location they want. It all depends on how many others want the same thing as you do, when you do.
