Actually, I think this thread might have been intended for recommendations of GOOD restaurants.

The LONG list given is just a list of N.O. restaurants. In looking it over, I see several that have closed, a few that are in undesirable locations, and some that are not even any good - at least, I wouldn't eat there....:rolleyes:....and I'm a native New Orleanian.

Awesome list. Can anyone give me an idea where to take 2 young children to eat? I just don't want to go to a restaurant and the kids not being able to find anything they could eat. They need the basic mac n cheese, chicken nuggets, etc. Thankfully, they are not food gourmets yet or we'd be spending even more money on this trip.

The obvious restaurant is the one by your hotel, Friday's, but I wouldn't want to go to New Orleans to eat in a Friday's. It does meet your requirements, complete with children's menu.

http://www.tgifridays.com/menu/kidsmenu.htm {not tried this one}

A problem I'm having is trying to keep you off of Bourbon Street, otherwise, I might think here, perhaps:

http://www.remoulade.com/remomenu.html

Would anything on their menu be of interest:

http://www.ralphandkacoos.com/ {not tried this location, but liked others}

Are you willing to take a taxi ?

I don't know of any restaurant that would NOT bring enough crackers and bread and butter to fill the kids. Add a desert on top of that - voila!

Most of the usual suspect fast food joints are available. There is a Krystal (on Bourbon, again, one block over):

http://www.krystal.com/default.asp[/url]

Would it work letting the kids eat and then watch you eat in a better place? Nah, it never works like that.

Fiorella's might work, but I don't have an online menu (offhand) for them. It's a hole in the wall.

Lousiana Pizza Kitchen?

I think Cafe Maspero's will be too long of a wait.

Children's menu has mac cheese and chicken strips

http://www.bubbagump.com/

There is Mona Lisa Restaurant on Royal (reminds me - not sure if all of these places are still open - I can only eat so much!)

and very close:

I would not forget about this place - THEY DELIVER - 24 hours (mostly)

http://www.vertimarte.com/

And have good mac/cheese! Maybe if you eat somewhere and the kids aren't happy/filled order some (and maybe some other stuff - think they have a minimum). But if someone/everyone is about to blow a gasket...

Maybe start here:

http://www.bestofneworleans.com/dispatch/2004-10-12/cover_story2.html

{click on or search/scroll down to French Quarter restaurants}

and here:

http://www.frenchquarter.com/dining/all_dining.php

And ask again? I've made myself toooooooo hungry thinking about!

Also to keep in mind - not all French Quarter restaurants are going to be open when you are there.

Try Pontalba Cafe - right on Jackson Square. If you're standing in front of St. Louis Cathedral, look to your left, it's catty-corner from the cathedral, and you can't miss it. (Beats Maspero's 1,000 to one!) Also a great place to do some people-watching, as it has the floor-to-ceiling open doors so you can look out at all the activity around the square. I've taken my young grandson there and he loved the food.

I never have really understood the popularity of Maspero's (the Cafe aka sandwich one, not to be confused with the other one across from Napolean House). For those who want to go there, there is usually a really long line to get in. If you are willing to eat at the bar and there is space available, go ahead an bypass the line and ask the host(ess) if you can just eat at the bar. Shhh... Don't tell anyone.

Pontalba does look good - have not been.

Found this:

http://www.neworleansrestaurants.com/cafepontalba/

A sample menu and a coupon for free desert with entree. No reservations it says.

In the same area is another one I forgot about, but is on the long list I posted: http://www.muriels.com/

and I just noticed they have mac/cheese on the menu! No coupon, but they take reservations. Normally open 7 days a week, hopefully they will be open that weekend. I think this is definitely one to consider - might even see if they will take a reservation for when you are there - you can always cancel. Would also verify that mac/cheese is always available.

Zydeco - Thx for posting the site for the Cafe Pontalbo's menu. I've popped in there quite often over the years, usually for something quick while I'm on the run. The roast beef po-boy is the best I've had anywhere in the city! I'm normally more into seafood, but this is excellent! Nice and drippy like a rb pb should be. The gumbo is very good, as well.

I tried Maspero's rb pb once, and didn't eat half of it.:( I'm with you - amazed that folks actually stand in line to eat at that place....mostly tourists, for sure. (The only times I've gone there is because my visitors insisted. I told them they would be disappointed, and they were!) It's so noisy, you can hardly think. Quite different from Cafe Pontalbo. Try it next time you're in the Quarter.

BTW, with your screen name, I'm wondering if you're originally from N.O. like me?

Hi Cotton,

Yes, I was born and raised in New Orleans. Who's your Momma; where'd you go to school? Still catch cruises and visit family there several times a year. The monicker comes from an annual event for me - the zydecocruise (no relation):

http://www.homestead.com/cajunzydeco/files/zydecocruise2004/zydecocruise.htm

Will be arriving in New Orleans around midnight next Friday - no doubt starving. Bozo's obviously won't be open for an oyster pb - will probably try one from one of these:

http://www.dannyandclydes.com

Several locations are open 24 hours and will be (almost) on my way in from the airport.

RB PB from Domilices almost daily got me through High School (along with oyster, shrimp...). Now whenever in town, I tend to pick one up at R&Os. Will keep Pontalba in mind.

Don't think tourists understand an obsession with RB PBs.

Been on the Holiday several times. U217 is one of my favorite solo cabins.

Kats and Rats. Confederacy of Dunces. Where did I leave that Big Chief tablet?

Love Port of Call - Ray Davies may disagree - same burger, still the same owner?, less wait at Snug Harbor, me thinks:

http://www.snugjazz.com/

Didn't even realize they had a website - must be new(er):

http://www.portofcallneworleans.com/

Will be home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and then also that cruise thing next week or so.

Enjoy your cruise!
