Gaijin_Mom Posted March 6, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 6, 2008 I'm disappointed! I procrastinated with applying for a rci visa card and now the intro offer is down to 10,000 points according to the BOA website. So tell me, what does 10,000 points get me? Thanks! mamacat3 Posted March 6, 2008 #3 Share Posted March 6, 2008 Don't feel bad - I only got 2500 points when I got mine. 10,000 points gets you $100.00 shipboard credit or a good start toward more. If you pay it off every month the interest is no problem. You have 10 yrs to cash in the points so at the least a companion fare is possible!! Gaijin_Mom Posted March 6, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted March 6, 2008 I had been hoping to just get a card each for me and dh to get $300 off our upcoming cruise. Don't really need another card, but the cash for the cruise would be nice! Does the 10,000 points equal $100 obc or $100 discount off the cruise? Is there a minimum number of points you have to "cash in" at a time? Sorry for the questions...couldn't find the answers on the BOA website. Thanks for the help! Aprille Posted March 6, 2008 #5 Share Posted March 6, 2008 5,000 is the minimum to cash in. 15,000 is the minimum for $$ off a cruise ($150). Here is a list of the reward levels and what you can cash them in for: RCCL Visa Rewards You have 10 yrs to cash in the points...I thought it was 5 years. mamacat3 Posted March 6, 2008 #6 Share Posted March 6, 2008 Here is the link at RCCL that gives the point tiers. http://www.royalcaribbean.com/dealsandmore/offer/visa.do;jsessionid=00004hkF-sxJL1eTeDyoaF7inny:12hbioe0u?cS=NAVBAR If this doesn't take you to it - go to RCCL and under deals and gifts they have Visa card - click on it and the info is there. I thought it was 10 years but it may be five. You can check with them. You cannot combine your husbands and your points. IMHO it is still a good deal. Good luck. Aprille Posted March 6, 2008 #7 Share Posted March 6, 2008 It is 5 years. From the "Royal Points" link within the link both mamacat3 and I provided: EXPIRATION AND CANCELLATION OF ROYAL POINTS 10. Royal Points accumulate for a maximum of sixty (60) Months from when they are first posted to the account (the Posting Date is not the same as the Transaction Date.) This is a Royal Points life expectancy of approximately five (5) calendar years and means that over the course of five (5) Years, you may accumulate and redeem a maximum of one million two hundred fifty thousand (1,250,000) Royal Points. mamaza Posted March 6, 2008 #8 Share Posted March 6, 2008 A large monthly payment with high interest.... ;) That it could (I see your wink). We've had ours now since October and got the 15000 pts. We decided that until the trip, anything we usually pay by gas card, or department store card or more important, checks (excepting bank payments, cuz they don't give you points for those) we now pay by the Visa & collect the points, and then make one check out instead of about 20 a month. I also have given up the use of my Bank Debit card for retail purchase for the RCCI card. This has given us an additional 8000 points then add the double point payoff of our cruise which banked 3000 more points. I'm guessing that at my present rate, we'll have close to 35000 points or $350 in credit. OBC, I'm assuming to go along with the $100 OBC we already have and that will probably just about cover our normal expenses. Just have to remember to not buy what you can't pay for. At 13%, it's still a high interest card. A note: Can't you get $50 certificates and use them as payment of your cruise, too. I'll have to check the site again. So, even with 10,000 X 2 points, you should do well. OBC is still good as you will probably use it anyway. Whether the money comes from your front pocket or your back pocket shouldn't matter. It's still your money. :)
Aprille Posted March 6, 2008 #9 Share Posted March 6, 2008 A note: Can't you get $50 certificates and use them as payment of your cruise, too.No. As I stated previouisly the 15,000 level is the minimum for $$ off a cruise and it is for $150 off. 5,000 will get you $50 OBC or a choice of a few other amenities you can choose from but none of the options are for a $50 certificate to use for payment towards a cruise. Everything is spelled out pretty clearly in the link I provided in my first reply to this thread.
klfhngr Posted March 6, 2008 #10 Share Posted March 6, 2008 We have 18,000 points, I called a few days ago, we'll be using our points for $150 OBC in April.

But, OBC can be used in so many ways. I think you can even go to the casino and take out cash for play.
Aprille Posted March 6, 2008 #12 Share Posted March 6, 2008 I think you can even go to the casino and take out cash for play.Yes, now that you can do. :) I've even been know to cash out all my OBC, take it back home and deposit it letting that amount be recharged to my RCCL Visa therefore basically getting double credits for it again.
islanderbob654 Posted March 6, 2008 #13 Share Posted March 6, 2008 I remember comparing the RCI card to other cards that offered various travel points and not being very impressed. I love RCI, but needless to say, I don't carry their credit card. I guess it all depends on what your needs are, though. Also, one of the previous posters mentioned the high interest rate. They're right--don't fool yourself--if you aren't paying your balance in full every month the points on any credit card are just a joke.
cmmarch Posted March 6, 2008 #14 Share Posted March 6, 2008 We have 18,000 points, I called a few days ago, we'll be using our points for $150 OBC in April. Called last week for ours also.....do you know how long it takes to get the certificates? Nothing has come in the mail yet(it's been about 5 business days).
chotton Posted March 6, 2008 #15 Share Posted March 6, 2008 We used 125,000 points (which tapped us out) for an AOS cruise two years ago and I just mailed in 80,000 points ($800 onboard credit) for our Brilliance cruise next month.
Gaijin_Mom Posted March 6, 2008 Author #16 Share Posted March 6, 2008 Thanks everyone! $100 OBC is better than nothing! (Not as good as $150, but hey, I'll take it!) Thanks for the help!
lazygal Posted March 6, 2008 #17 Share Posted March 6, 2008 CMMARCH, I called for mine last Monday and had them by Saturday. I filled it out (always make a copy) and sent them off today to Crown and Anchor. They have taken up to six weeks to get though. The day I called, I asked for the confirmation number and called it into Crown and Anchor myself. If you don't get them in time - get the number and call it in. I always take the copies on board, in case the credit doesn't show up.
songster2 Posted March 6, 2008 #18 Share Posted March 6, 2008 I just called to redeem 50,000 points to apply to my final payment in a few days, and when I mentioned that my sign-up bonus 5 years ago was 2500 points and the new sign-up bonuses were very nice, the rep added 15,000 points to my account. That means I'll have enough for a free companion fare for my December Eastern Caribbean cruise!!!:D

I asked for certificate #'s when I made my initial call and they did not know what I was talking about?? We are cruising in approx. 6 wks so I am anxious to just get them & send them on..... tprime76 Posted March 7, 2008 #21 Share Posted March 7, 2008 It usually takes around 2 weeks to get the certs. We are going on Serenade later this month and got a total of $1500 off the cruise + $750 OBC. I didn't know this until I tried to redeem more, but $1500 is the limit for discount off of a cruise fare. The remaining is being applied to OBC. Like many others on here, we use the credit card for EVERYTHING. Those little $5 and $7 purchases add up faster than you think and when you pay off the card every month it is like free money. happy40th Posted March 7, 2008 #22 Share Posted March 7, 2008 I didn't read all the posts so I don't know if this was already said but with the help of these boards I went directly to Bank of America site and applied and they were still doing 15,000 for signing up. wantacruise Posted March 14, 2008 #24 Share Posted March 14, 2008 I just got my cert in the mail. I plan to make a copy of it before I send it in to Crown and Anchor but, do I HAVE to call it in to Crown and Anchor first or am I ok just to mail it (keeping my copy)? Thanks for any replies.
