How bad is the cigarette smoke on Carnival?

Hi,

Search is down, so I'm sorry if this has been answered before. I'm fairly new to cruising and booked a cruise for 9 people for my Mom-in-law's 65th birthday surprise on Carnival Valor at end of May. We have twin two-year olds and we're non-smokers with sensitive noses. Being from a state that forbids smoking in most indoor (and some outdoor) spaces, I'm a little nervous about all the cigarette smoke that I just realized is allowed on Carnival. We're not big drinkers so won't be in the bars much and our time in the casino will be limited by the toddlers. We booked adjoining triple balcony cabins on Upper deck (6360/6362). My in-laws are also non-smokers. Their first and only cruise, which they loved, was on Celebrity. I'm not going to change the booking now, but just want to be prepared.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Our last Carnival cruise was in 2002, but this info should still be relevant. We haven't yet had a problem with a stinky cabin...most of the time if there was a smoker in the cabin one week, the stewards usually are able to clean it so you can't smell anything. But if you walk down the hallway, you'll be able to tell which cabins have heavy duty cabins by the tobacco smell wafting out.

We have never gotten a balcony cabin but after reading many threads on smoking on CC, we are glad. We wouldn't want to pay to have a balcony and then be unfortunate to have a smoker nearby.

There's no smoking allowed in the dining rooms, in the main lounge (used to be one side smoking, one side not), and on one side of the deck areas. I remember sitting in the nonsmoking area on the Holiday while pregnant and then realize there was a smoker nearby (completely ignoring the no smoking sign and the lack of ashtrays on the tables) and have to tell them to move to the smoking area.

One of our favorite cruises was on the Paradise when it was still a non-smoking ship (its first few years in service). In order to get onboard, you had to sign a pledge that you will not even possess any tobacco products during the cruise. If caught, you would be kicked off and have to return home at your expense. Even the crew members couldn't smoke onboard.

One thing that may affect the number of smokers onboard is where many of the passengers are from (some countries seem to have a higher percentage) or is there's a big number of addicted types (unfortunately on one cruise, there was a lot of bingo players onboard for some World of Bingo Tourney and they seem to be constantly eating, smoking, drinking, gambling).

I've become spoiled about cigarette smoke as I'm also from a pretty much non-smoking state (and I also had twin two year olds on my Carnival cruise). I never noticed any smoking inside (not sure it's allowed anywhere but the casino) and outside there was either a section or a side of the ship in each area that was easy to avoid (we learned which side of the deck to sit on, etc). To be honest, I did notice that there were more smokers overall than other ships I've been on, but I was not bothered by smoke, and I would have been had I had to smell it at all.

Best,

Mia

I've been on 2 Carnival older ships, but I did notice smoke much more on these 2 cruises than on any other cruise. And the ironic part is that my hubby smokes (outside only and never around our kids). But I could still smell smoke as soon as we started walking down the hall to our cabin.

The casino was also very smoky. And you can smoke in the bars. And half of the outside Lido deck is smoking, so when walking to breakfast I had to make sure we stayed on the non smoking side when I walked my kids up.

Now on a balcony, I have never smelled smoke from other cabins. The wind is just too great. So that has never been a problem.

I agree with Sweetest Sin. The Valor wasn't that smoky. The one place I would say that the cigarette smoke was not contained was the casino. I would avoid going by there if you can. It was very smoky walking through the Cigar Bar (yuk!) to get to the internet cafe, but that was it...enjoy the Valor:)

I didn't notice that much smoke on the Valor when I went during the summer. The only place I seen people smoke is at the Casino Bar and like on the decks, otherwise there wasnt that much smoke, and im a non-smoker too, and those are the only place I smelt it. Also the Carnival Valor is a beautiful ship and you will enjoy it and have fun.
