Cabinboy1943 Posted March 19, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 19, 2008 Hi All This is the reply from P&O to an email I sent requesting info on smoking in cabins. Some may find it of interest. cabinboy ========================================================== Thank you for your email and apologies for the delay in my reply. As I am sure you will appreciate, all of our policies are under constant review and are therefore subject to change. However, at present, the policy for all forthcoming cruises will be as follows - Smoking on Artemis, Arcadia, Aurora, and Oriana will continue to be permitted in cabins (including those with balconies) and in certain areas on the open decks. However, the cabins are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between and during all cruises and all other enclosed passenger areas on each ship, including the dining venues, will be non-smoking. In addition, I can advise that the policy has recently changed on Oceana and Ventura. From April, smoking will not be permitted within cabins on board. However, smoking will still be allowed on balconies, on certain areas of the open decks and in the dedicated public room. The public rooms with designated smoking areas on each ship will be as follows - Artemis Horizon Lounge Arcadia Rising Sun Aurora Crow's Nest Oceana Winners Oriana Crow's Nest Ventura The Exchange Our policy is and will remain fully compliant with applicable law and is designed to reflect the public attitude towards smoking, protecting those who do not wish to smoke whilst still recognising the needs of our smoking passengers. Is this not an infringement of the human rights of non smokers. They will have to suffer secondary smoke if they wish to enter the one venue were smokers will be allowed to congregate to indulge their habit. Whatever can P&O be thinking about, what will they allow next? crack dens, bear baiting in the theatre? Disgusted Cb in Lancashire

Cabinboy1943 Posted March 19, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted March 19, 2008 Whatever can P&O be thinking about, what will they allow next? crack dens, bear baiting in the theatre? quote from Cruisebore. ====================================================== With the greatest respect, after an over exaggerated remark like that would I be right to assume that you would be also be over exaggerating the effects of someone lighting up 100 yards away, and putting on an exaggerated pained expression accompanied by an exaggerated cough? Then there is clutching the throat, covering the mouth and nose with a hanky, wearing a gas mask. Falling to the deck with a touch of the vapours. You see if you think about it the ways of expressing your disapproval are endless. And I do not exaggerate. Go for it. regards cabinboy

The stage whisper "these awful smokers" Perhaps others can add to the list. Cb

Scorpio1411 Posted March 20, 2008 #7 Share Posted March 20, 2008 Here we go again. People always have to find something to moan about otherwise they're not happy. If it wasn't smokers being picked on it would be people drinking, laughing, breathing!!!! On our last cruise, we would often go to the casino for a flutter after dinner and the smell that used to hit you as you walked in caused by people who obviously wanted to share their bodily functions with everyone was disgusting. It would make you feel sick but obviously the people responsible didn't care as they were doing their silent but deadlies. If people don't like others smoking, don't use the rooms designated for it just as you would turn over the channel on TV if you didn't like the programme. Or are you one of the people who watch it then ring up and moan moan moan about it.

Cabinboy1943 Posted March 21, 2008 Author #12 Share Posted March 21, 2008 Hi cruisebore I have the answer to your problems. Try hiring a boat and cruise the Norfolk Broads. Just think, you can have as many formal, informal and casual nights as you like. Your table companions will be of your own choosing, likewise destinations. If you are lucky it will pour with rain the whole time you are on board to suit your general outlook on life and mood. No stewards to tip and no need to be cheerful at all. A bonus will be if the boat breaks down which will give you something to complain about. Dare you even wish that it sinks? Think of that. It would really put the icing on the cake for you. I hope this has been of some help with your holiday plans. There is no charge. Regards cabinboy

MattOsprey Posted March 23, 2008 #15 Share Posted March 23, 2008 I dislike smoking, and don't want to inhale second hand smoke. And I don't want to go to a cabin that smells of smoke. Or like on 1 cruise where the people next door were smoking and the smell was coming through the adjoining door. However I do believe that cruise companies have a responsibility to provide areas for smokers to smoke. This is usually done with other passangers in mind. And apart from the smoking in cabins, which I think is wrong, I have always found ship smokers to be aware of the fact that more and more people don't like it and they show utmost respect for us non-smokers. Hi MattOsprey It is nice to find someone with a balanced view on this subject for a change. In all things you will find the selfish types that carry on with no regard to the feeling of others. I like to think of myself as a considerate smoker. I never smoke in the wrong areas or in houses of friends or relations. I do not even smoke in my own house. That said I would take issue with the point that you make saying more and more people don't like it. I would suggest like most things if a restriction is placed on something there are always the ones that do not indulge that take great pleasure in reminding people of it. The number of times I heard prior to the ban "you won't be able to smoke here or there etc when the ban comes in" And it was always with a smug smirk and a holier than thou attitude. There have always been people who do not like smoking and there always will be. I do not think their numbers have increased. I think the ban has just caused more of them to have words to say on the subject now we have these draconian laws. With a little give and take there should be no problem in catering for those on both sides of the argument. The trouble is there are those on both sides that are not prepared to do this. cruisebore Posted May 23, 2008 #21 Share Posted May 23, 2008 Unlike my friend cabinboy, I spent my formative years on the stage in my home city of Liverpool. Yes the landing stage, pushing the boats out :) regards Cb

jeanlyon Posted June 6, 2008 #23 Share Posted June 6, 2008 I think some of you are being very unfair on those of us who don't like a cabin that stinks of smoke. Personally I don't mind there being smoking areas on the ship, as I can avoid them, however, when I go into my cabin on the first day and it stinks of smoke, then that is quite awful and there is nothing you can do about it. It gets into everything. If P&O have banned smoking in cabins on 2 ships, then they should do it on all of them, not to mention the danger of fire starting in a cabin. jeanlyon Posted June 7, 2008 #25 Share Posted June 7, 2008 Well I can only pray that there were non-smokers in my cabin when I board the ship. P&O told me in an e-mail that they use a spray and it won't smell. Unfortunately, that is garbage, cos you can always smell it.
