btobey Posted March 31, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 31, 2008 Hi, we're sailing on Amsterdam next month and are wondering if there are ATMs on board; we're just trying to decide how much cash we need to take (probably more than we think!).
Rare Copper10-8 Posted March 31, 2008 #2 Share Posted March 31, 2008 Hi, we're sailing on Amsterdam next month and are wondering if there are ATMs on board; we're just trying to decide how much cash we need to take (probably more than we think!). Nope, no ATM's on HAL (as of yet;) ) - Saw one once on, I believe, a Princess ship but it wasn't working. You can get a cash advance on HAL at the Front Office for a 3% service fee. You can cash out travellers checks there also - Have a good cruise!
PalmBeachMom Posted March 31, 2008 #3 Share Posted March 31, 2008 I have never seen an ATM on board. The ship is a "cashless" experience. All extras are charged to your onboard account which will be settled the day before your cruise ends. You will be asked to register a credit card with HAL upon check-in. I believe cash advances are also available in the casino, but there is a fee. However, I have never seen a port town without an ATM! It is especially helpful in foreign ports that do not accept US currency. If I take too much cash with me, or get a bit lucky in the casino, my personal preference is to apply it to my shipboard account at the end of the cruise to reduce the total charged to my credit card. PalmBeachMom Posted March 31, 2008 #4 Share Posted March 31, 2008 By the way, enjoy your cruise and Happy Anniversary! After a hard winter in Rochester, you deserve it. I know....I grew up in Binghamton!
btobey Posted March 31, 2008 Author #5 Share Posted March 31, 2008 Thanks, PBM! I figured there would be ATMs in the ports, DH and I just thought that the service fees might be ridiculously high. We know onboard is cashless, we're just guessing that we're going to need much more cash than we think for port expenditures.

Many have cooperative arrangements with banks in other countries that can reduce the fees. Remember, though, that it isn't only the fee but also the exchange rate (and ATM rates are almost always the best) that determines your actual cost.
