skiiergirl Posted April 1, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 1, 2004 We stayed there in Oct. It is not near anything so you can not walk anywhere. We were only there for one evening so it was ok. We got there around 7...did dinner at Outback in the hotel and then just went to bed. In the morning we had the complimentary breakfast which was decent and then we just relaxed until about 11 and then took a taxi to the pier. WE HAD ONE BIG COMPLAINT THOUGH! THE CASINO WAS NOT OPEN! That was one of the reasons I booked the hotel. My husband had stayed there previously and had enjoyed the casino. They did not inform the TA that it was closed for remodeling. When we got there we went down to find it. When we couldn't find it we asked and were told it was closed for remodeling. My mom was very disappointed. (We got enough gambling in the rest of the week on the ship but for that night we were very disappointed.) While we were disappointed the casino was not open, we were even more upset that the hotel had not informed the TA of this. (There were even brochures and cardboard advertisements in the room telling you to come on down.) If you are just looking for a place to hang your hat for one night and get a decent dinner at Outback (be prepared for a wait though) and then have a decent complimentary breakfast then this would be ok. However, if you want to go elsewhere around town you will have to take a taxi. (It cost us approx $20 for 3 of us with bags to get from the airport to hotel and then approx another $20 to get from the hotel to the pier.) Hopefully they will have the casino back open by November if that is important to you. (Actually it might already be open...I don't know when it was to reopen. We didn't ask since it wouldn't make any difference for us that weekend.)
DMorris Posted April 1, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 1, 2004 I didn't pick the hotel for the location. I am a fan of Embassy Suites. I knew it was close to the airport and not the pier. I also know we have to take transportation if we want to go anywhere. Thanks for the heads up. canudigit Posted April 1, 2004 #8 Share Posted April 1, 2004 I'm staying at the Embassy Suites from April 8-10 before out cruise. I'll everyone know what I thought when I get back. I chose it b/c I redeemed Hilton points and wanted to be closer to some of the nightlife in Isla Verde. We'll probably spend part of the day in old San Juan and maybe have dinner, but we wanted to be closer to the Waterclub and the El San Juan, the beach, etc. Countdown to 4/10/2004 Serenade of the Seas

skigirl Posted April 2, 2004 #11 Share Posted April 2, 2004 We've stayed there twice pre cruise. We also chose it because we like Embassy Suites and they work best for our family with teens - we have the space and privacy but don't need to spend $$ for two rooms. We found it just fine - very much like any other Embassy Suites. It's quite close to the airport but noise was never a problem. They have a very nice pool and pool area, and the manager's reception and complimentary breakfast are great. It is a two block walk to Isla Verde Beach, we have done this both times, the first time it was just me and my then 9 year old daughter and we felt quite safe. Yes, you have to take a cab into Old San Juan, which we've also done both times, but if you don't stay in Old San Juan you have to do this anyway. Finally, both times we have eaten in the Outback, we keep trying to get out and explore more but by dinner time we find ourselves exhasted from the long day of traveling and we can barely make it to the Outback. One hint if it looks like it is getting busy - if you are in the lobby at the manager's reception go over and give them your name, then come back and enjoy a drink until your table is ready. We did this last time and walked right in. Enjoy!
skiiergirl Posted April 2, 2004 #12 Share Posted April 2, 2004 Dee....I am huge fan of ES too. It is my "preferred hotel chain". I was just really, really disappointed that the casino was shut down for remodeling during our stay and they hadn't bothered to inform the TA. The bartender and food service staff were very nice. Our room was acceptable but it is definitely not one of the newer ES. It was a little run down. I really like ES it is just that this particular one really disappointed me. Oh, yeah...I had forgotten until just now that while we were getting ready on Sunday morning our bathroom blew a fuse and we had no lights or power. I had to shower in the dark. I am still a big fan of ES and I might even stay at this one again.

DMorris Posted April 3, 2004 #16 Share Posted April 3, 2004 I am sorry that the casino was closed during your visit. That would really suck if it happened to me. Yes they should have told you before hand so you could have made an informed decision. I love ES's and will always stay there if they have them in the area I am traveling. Just loyal I guess. Bobby, you are more then welcome to stay at the Hilton if you think you would like it more. I just don't think we can afford to move there. They want 2x's what we are paying at the ES. Plus happy hour and breakfast are included at the ES. That will make up the cost of the ES in a heart beat for all of us. HEHEHEHEHE CTKath, There is rate of $173 on the ES web site, they normally for for $199 and up. SANDY823 Posted April 3, 2004 Author #18 Share Posted April 3, 2004 CTKathy - the 2 bdrm. goes for 299.00,, by calling or the web site.. I tried all the discounts,, aaa, aarp, entertainment,, but they wouldnt' take for the 2 bdrm suite. If more than 4 adults, you have to call, as on line only lets you book 4 adults plus 4 kids, and i'm sure they give vouchers for the brkfsts.. via amount of people. but was same price for 2bdrm suite if you had 2, 4 or 6 people. Dee, if you found the 2 bdrm. for less than 299, please tell me where.... thanks, Sandy SANDY& BOB from Massachusetts Carnival Tropicale 4/2000 Carnival Victory 4/2001 Carnival Fantasy 11/2001 Carnival Pride 4/13/2002 RCCL Navigator 4/19/2003 RCCL Mariner 1/04/2004 RCCL Serenade 4/10/2004 RCCL Adventure 11/14/2004 till the Mixed Nutz "marinade" on the Serenade !!! birdyhunter Posted April 3, 2004 #19 Share Posted April 3, 2004 I booked the 2 room suite for July 3rd. It is $299 per night. There are 6 of s and it was cheaper for us to do this instead of 2 rooms. They won't budge on the price and won't take any discount programs. DMorris Posted April 3, 2004 #20 Share Posted April 3, 2004 I didn't know they had a 2 bedroom. I booked a 2 room suite, which means a bedroom and a living room. The bedroom can have 2 doubles or a king and the living room has a pull out couch. Where are you all seeing a 2 bedroom? The $173 on line I saw was for the 2 room suite I just mentioned. lmmn Posted April 3, 2004 #21 Share Posted April 3, 2004 We stayed at the Embassy Suites in January. It was just like all the other Embassy Suites I have stayed. Likes: large rooms, complimentary breakfast, close to airport, very accommodating about holding bags until room becomes available, and they will allow you to check-in if room is available before check-in time. The pool is very nice. Dislikes: Not much to do within walking distance and it is quite far from Old San Juan.
