Cabin assignment

Hi carlylecat,

We were right across the hall from 324, in 321. Technically, 324 is below the spa and 321 is below the fitness room. I saw your post last week when I was onboard SD2, but didn't have time to respond. I made it a point to see if I could hear the fitness center. I think I heard the faint sounds of a treadmill one morning, but not enough to bother me.

If you're interested, I can tell you what you DO hear in 321/324.

I gather you hear the anchor being dropped and raised.

Do tell ... what else?

Daily, around 0500, there were loud noises that seemed to happen in a pattern. My lack of knowledge of all things maritime prevents me from sounding intelligent with these things. Anyway, I don't think it was the anchor (because it was too early) and it was VERY loud. Didn't bother me too much, however, because I'm an early riser by nature; I used it as my alarm clock. Sounded like it was right in our stateroom.

The other loud noises occurred during rough seas. As the ship rose on swells, she'd slam with a loud clap on her way back down. The only time it really bothered us was during our bout with seasickness. Of course, everything bothered us then.

Would I book this stateroom? Nope. However, when booking GTY, one has to take what one is assigned. :)

I liked 212 better, which is the stateroom we had in the Med.

That sounds dreadful, ok new cabin for us, we were excited about being on the thrid deck, having always traveled down on two

anyone have a clue what teh loud 5 am noise could be?

I can't speak for 324, only for 321. However, if it's as loud, you'd be best to move mid-ship or further back. I have no clue what it was, but a couple of times was startled awake. Actually, I've been surprised on both our voyages with the amount of noises we hear/heard in our staterooms. I suppose that's what happens in a small ship. I'll take it, though, because big ships are not for us.

Next time, unless we book GTY, I'm booking Deck 2, mid-ship or further aft. In fact, paying the extra money (in lieu of GTY) to select our stateroom might be our route.

Carlyle Cat,

These are some of the same ports that we did on SD1 last month.

In Culebrita there is a nice little beach. SD will run the Zodiacs (wet landing) back and forth. We didn't even bother getting off SD but friends of ours who did said it was a nice little beach for walking and swimming.

The draw in Vieques is the Bio Bay tour. The ship will run the excursion. We didn't do it last month as it was so close to full moon that I knew it would be hard to see the effect.

St. John is one of our favorite islands! You can rent a car and drive the island ... there are wonderful beaches like Trunk Bay, Hawksnest and others along the North Shore. I think SD offered an excursion to Trunk Bay, which is a US National Park that has an underwater snorkel trail. Our DD who is 15 just loves that trail. I would suggest if you go to Trunk Bay go early as the cruisers from STT come over for the day and it can get crowded. There is a little bit of shopping in Cruz Bay. On the other side of the island is Coral Bay which is a neat little place for beach drinks and burgers.

Marigot is the French side of St. Martin. Two years ago we did the sailing excursion where you race America's Cup sailboats/yachts. It is a great excursion. You can work as little or as much as you want during the race. The ship will have this as an excursion I am sure. You can find some good deals on linen and such in Marigot.

Hope that helps:D

We were in 216 and 218 and heard no noise coming from the mechanics of the ship at all. We were even next to the door to the crew quarters and did not hear a peep or was bothered by their comings and goings. However while we were sailing we did hear extremely loud bangs as Cammiem mentioned. It usually woke us up and was quite unsettling. I asked the captain what they were and he said depending on the direction the ship was sailing in it was the waves hitting the side of the boat!!! YIKES----didnt sound like any waves I've ever seen. On our last night sailing to Barbados we were sailing with the swells instead of against them and there were no loud bangs.

we received 307 309 311 and 315 on sd1 instead of 315 317 322 and 324 on sd2 - thanks everyone for the "big bang" theory reports

Thanks for the itinerary help, marigot and trunk bay sound great - looks like the moon will co-operate almost no moon for the bay, also the first nights look great for sleeping out under ths stars, has anyone done that lately, I assume it is still best to use the up front portion of the ship versus the Balinese beds!

anyone stay at the sheraton across from the pier, How "sheratony" is it?

We have alwas stayed at the ritz before the trip and the hassle getting our luggage over to the port seem slike we can just walk it across the street from the sheraton

Carlylecat:

Have stayed at the Sheraton 2 times so far. First time, a normal room. Clean and typical for Sheraton. Food was good at the restaurant. Cant beat the location for watching SD dock and for simply walking to the ship. Second time (last December) was hit by the upgrade fairy and they gave us a suite overlooking the port. Very nice. Will probably stay there again unless the Convento drops the 2 night min.

Jim.

carlylecat,

We stayed at the Sheraton across form the pier the day before our SD voyage. It was completely dreadful. You can read my review of the hotel on my blog. Go to www.camsfam.blogspot.com and click on "Pre-Cruise: San Juan, Puerto Rico" and the April 13th posts. Keep in mind that I can't say anything in 20 words or less and that I'm a self-professed hotel snob. :D I believe maryella & her family stayed at the Ritz prior to embarkation; they seemed to really like it.

If you are going to sleep overnight on a sunbed, might I suggest you reserve the front bed? You should do so on embarkation day in order to reserve the night you'd like. It is a wonderful experience! If there are no clouds in the sky, you will be gazing up at the incredibly large stars and, depending on how much moonlight there is, you will be bathed with a beautiful glow. It's not too bright, though, as we slept under the stars during an almost-full moon. The "mattress" is rather firm, but that did not bother us. Take extra pillows from your stateroom if you'd like. Also, we really appreciated the "Do Not Disturb" signs that were placed on either side of the forward part of the yacht that prevented early risers from waking us. Truly, a wonderful experience!

Your stateroom assignments sound much better this time around. Sounds like you're set-up for a great time!

Up on deck six all the way forward there are permanent sun beds that are larger and a different shape than the Balinese beds

I dont know if the trip report is still around but on our cruise around Italy in 2006 we slept outside on the balinese beds and were awakened by another couple making whoopie on a bed two slots down from us....needless to say we are a little skittish about doing that again and on our last trip we discovered that you can reserve the forward beds on deck 6 so it is much more private

Carlylecat-thanks for the tip. I just checked and we will have a full moon in the middle of the week of our greek isle cruise on SD II which departs Athens June 14. I will book the front bed for that night!

If you don't mind my asking: what is the front bed? By the way, Cammiem-i have really enjoyed your blogs! Thanks!

Thanks, yogagal47!

I see carlylecat answered your question about the front bed. It is more private and we felt like we were the only ones on the yacht.
