train excursion to Yukon from Skagway

The White Pass Railway? Yes we did it and we really liked it.

You can do the train on your own and not through the cruise line (although we did it through the cruise ship excursions). You can find out more information on the Alaska Port of Call Boards.

Have a great time.

If you are in for a longer rail adventure, take the train to Charcross. The excursion usually includes a barbequed lunch. Otherwise you usually can take the bus one way to allow more time to play around in Skagway. Be sure to bring your passport on the excursion.

Here is a descrition of the bus and rail excursion:

We also did the bus going and the railway coming back. It was awesome and not to be missed. Others rented a car and drove the same route. Be sure to take your passport if you are going all the way to the Yukon, as they will check it when you cross the Canadian border.

Enjoy!

We did this tour with Chilkoot Tours. It was great. We rode the train up to Fraser, BC, then boarded the motor coach (only 10-12 of us). We went to Caribou Crossing for lunch, walked through the museum and played with the husky puppies. You can also do a dog sled ride (on wheels) if you pay extra. Then we went to Emerald Lake, the Carcross Desert, and the town of Carcross (you can get your passport stamped at the post office if you want). Our driver would stop when ever anyone wanted a photo, and she dropped us off where ever we wanted in Skagway. Money well-spent, even according to my very frugal CPA husband!

Going to Alaska may 5. Has anyone taken the train excursion to Yukon from Skagway? Do you recommend it?

And make sure you buy the dvd which is for sale on board and in the gift shop.

Found out something the other day of interest - there is a tie in between this railroad and the St.Kitts Sugar train - apparently there is a guy - name excapes me for the moment who sort of manages or at least has an affiliation with both.

If you ever get to St.Kitts take this excursion as well

Greetings to all:

Save yourself a few dollars and buy the train ticket online. When you get off the ship the train is less than one hundred yards away and plus they have a free shuttle to boot to the train.

If you are one who needs a resupply of adult liquids they are available in town.

Wheretonext -really in Richmond-went to high school there decades ago.

Depends on where you want to go, as all the trains don't end up in the same place. Our train was not close to our ship at all.

Please no flames :)

Sorry, but thought we were speaking of the White Pass Railway train trip.

All the trains do not start out at the same place for the White Pass. And there are different places to get off. Just make sure you get on the right train. We booked the one for the Yukon trip, and while there was a train right at the ship, that was not our train. Our train ride ended at Fraser, BC and the other train went to the top. There wasn't a Carcross train when we were there in September because of all the flooding - part of the tracks were washed out.
