Sea Princess Food/Bar differences

Hi All,

 

I've read on here that since the Sea Princess has a UK registry (and thus attracts a large UK passenger contingent) that the food selections skew towards the British/European pallate, which is fine with me.

 

My question, for those of you that know, is if the Bar selection also tends to be more British. One of my favorite beers is Smithwicks from Ireland and I would be thrilled to be able to have that on board. (Also Guinness, Harp and Bass)

 

Anyone know if these are available? Or if they bring them on when sailing from Southampton?

If you don't get an answer on here try asking this question on the P & O UK broad their are a few people on there who have cruised on The Sea Princess.

Food was certainly geared to the British, however lots of choices and you will surely find lots to your liking. Lamb is served on a couple of nights which I love, and breakfast has lots of different choices as well. Things like braised tomatoes, sauteed mushrooms, Canadian bacon(they called it English).

Since I grew up with a Scottish father I really enjoyed the differences, they had food I grew up on.

 

They definately had Bass, and Guinness, not sure of the Harp, or the Smithwicks though.

 

We only took cruises to the Caribbean on the Sea, so it may be different out of England.

The dining room menu was the standard Princess, the buffet was geared toward British tastes.

The last time we were aboard (summer '06) Sea Princess had draught beer in the Casino bar - very handy to take to the pizzeria.

Haven't been on large Princess ships, so don't know if this is common on them - but haven't encountered it on the smaller ships.

My DH loves lamb and usually has it on the cruise since we don't generally cook it at home.

You will see things like bread pudding, broiled tomatoes and fried mushrooms at breakfast,....and we noted that last time we were on the Sea (and have not seen it on any other Princess ship), they had a special Cheese Table in the buffet area at dinner with slabs or wheels of cheese and a staff member served it up to you.

 

Other than that I recall nothing else that indicated that the food on the Sea was more "British" than any other Princess ship we have sailed on...but maybe us Canadians would not notice it as much as others would.

I have been on the Sea Princess the last two summers and they had both English and American bacon and sausages in the buffet in the morning. The other thing that was different from any other Princess ships is that I noticed the drinking age was 18 on the Sea Princess both years instead of the standard 21 on all other ships.

Katie333 - one of the nice things about having lamb on Sea Princess is that, probably because they have so many British passengers, you can actually get real mint sauce to have with the lamb - not just that green jelly that most ships serve.

From a breakfast perspective, I love mushrooms in my omlets so maybe I'll throw some on my eggs. And I'm a cheese fanatic, so that also sounds like a real plus.

 

I'm so looking forward to the experience and comparison (this is also my first time on a smaller Princess ship).

On the two nights I happened up to the Horizon Court for a late night snack, one night was "Pub Night" and featured fish and chips and steak and kidney pie amongst other things. The other was "Curry Night" and had a variety of Indian dishes and breads.

 

Being an expat Brit, it was one of the few things I loved about being on a ship that was predominantly British! (Sea Princess Med Cruise April 26, 2008).

 

Great food throughout the cruise.....enough choices to satisfy anyone and a very good standard overall.

Thanks for all the responses, everyone. I'm getting excited about the cruise, even though its still two months away. Fish and Chips, Bangers and Mash, Steak and Kidney Pie.... You'd never know I was a Yank, eh? Guess its just that I like the Pubs a bit much.

 

Even though they probably won't have my fave beer on board, I guess I'll just have to make do with A Bass or two (or three, or ..etc) and sitting in the sun and exploring northern Europe. Darn. How unlucky I am, right? LOL

I bet they even had mayonnaise for the chips. :p

The Sea is not a UK registered ship,she's Bermudan registered as all other Princess Ships.

But she is geared towards the British market; she hardly ever sails with more than 200 Canadians & Americans. All other passengers are British.

Mayonnaise is definitely not a Brit thing - more likely to be found in Belgium and Holland. Good old brown malt vinegar and salt are the usual accompaniments to chips. My two small grandchildren do, however, have their "dippy dip" of tomato ketchup:D

I'll have you know that this colonial, and I'm proud to be one, uses only malt vinegar. I picked up on the use of mayonnaise on fish & chips while in, you guessed it, London!

 

Our neighbors to the North even put mayo on hamburgers. Yuck!!!:mad:

The Sea Princess is one of our 2 favorite Princess ships (all the others we liked are loooooooong gone!) One of the reasons we like the Sea so much is because of the bars...they have Stella on tap plus they also have cider!

 

There are other British beers, but the Sea is the only Princess ship with draught beer!

 

It also has a separate pizzaria which is great. The menus are the regular Princess menus or at least they were the last time we were on her which was July 07 for a 14 day Mediterranean cruise rt Southampton.

 

The passengers are primarily Brits and we love to cruise with them because we find them to generally be friendly, polite and with great senses of humor. When things go wrong they are more apt to make a joke of it.

Good to know. My last cruise was populated with a rather grumpy bunch that thought they deserved everything and griped when they didn't get it.
