turned away from dining room on formal night?

Hi, I just read a post that said that "people who were not appropriately dressed on formal night were turned away by the maitre'd'."

I thought that formal wear was optional in dining rooms as long as you followed the dress code of "smart casual." (What is dumb casual, I wonder. :) )

?
Thanks!

This is direct from the Princess Patter for the sailing of 9/25:

"Guidelines for wear from 5:30 pm and throughout the evening are:
Formal : A dinner jacket or dark business suit for gentlemen and a full length evening gown, cocktail dress or trouser suit for ladies"

This was for the formal night and there is another dress code for "smart casual" so I would assume on some ships they might be enforcing the formal attire in the dining rooms. I have read though that the buffet does not ever require formal wear so that would always be an option for those who don't like to dress up.

The dress code for the dining room is posted each day in the Princess Patter. Of course, there are always people who do not follow the code. We saw 2 in cut-off jeans and sloppy T shirts escorted out of a dining room on another cruise line. Tho' I'm sure your smart casual wear is a nice look, it is not the proper dress for formal night. But you are most likely not going to have any problem with being allowed to wear nice clothes even tho' they are not formal.

[quote name='CariBlue']I thought that formal wear was optional in dining rooms as long as you followed the dress code of "smart casual." It is the dress for the entire ship for the evening. The dining rooms are the only places that people feel obliged to follow the dress code and if they don't want to they go to the Horizon Court where the suggested dress for the evening is still "formal" but is not enforced. Others change before the shows but the dress is still suggested as "formal" for the evening.

Smart casual is the suggested dress for the non-formal evenings. People chose to ignore this also and dress casual. The dining rooms do not enforce this but they do enforce no shorts or T-shirts.
