There was a recommendation for a guide from Sorrento who would pick you up and take you through the amalfi coast to Positano then Pompeii and back to the ship....can anyone recall who it was...? Thanks...the previous post about somebody looking at doing this was helpful but didnt mention any particular guides....:D

Hi roscoe39,

Go with Mariano, he is the best. http://www.pleasantravel.com/index.htm He lives on land near Sorrento that has been in his family for 3 generations. He knows and loves his country and loves to show it to people. Besides that he is a real gentleman and competely reliable. We first met him in 2003 and were with him again just a few weeks ago.

Hers's a picture of him.

Could it be www.aptours.it ??? We used them last November. Highly recommend them. They are based in Sorrento but picked us up in Naples....then to Pompeii, Ravello, Amalfi, Positano and finally to Sorrento where we took the ferry back to Naples. Awesome day !

How much did this tour cost?

How much did this tour cost?

First to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges..... you must remember that there are 1) drivers and 2) tours.

We paid 500 euros (4 couples split the cost) for a brand new van and a wonderful driver for the day. As posted he picked us up early in Naples right at the terminal at the port and we went straight to Pompeii. The company had arranged for a private guide for us (additional cost - 25 euros per couple) who was there waiting for us. We did a 2-1/2 hr tour of Pompeii. Then to Ravello, Amalfi, Positano and ended in Sorrento where we took the ferry back to Naples (also extra cost 11 euros pp). We had free time in each place to wander, shop, eat or whatever.

In total it was about 9 hrs. We had control over itinerary etc. Also figure that gas in Italy goes for about $ 9.00 a gallon and it's not so bad. We found our "tour mates" on our roll call.

You mentioned in your message that you found your tour mates on a "roll call". I am a novice at this. Can you provide information on how to do this?

Thanks!

CatF,

You go to the Roll Calls section of the main page (I think it is the 7th main heading). Once you find your cruiseline, when you open it there will be a list of ships. Once you find your ship, when you open it there will be a list of dates for sailings. You find yours and browse the responses. There will be some looking to share transfers, tours, and usually arrange a meet & greet on-board the ship. If not, then you start a thread asking if anyone is doing the tour you want to do or they would like to share? Private tours are very expensive if there are only 2 of you.

If you are looking for a guide that will actually be able to go with you into Pompeii, not a driver/guide who can not. I would highly recommend Veronica Maresca. Her website is http://www.dreamingsorrento.it/

It was fantastic! Pompeii was so interesting and the views of the Amalfi

coast are breathtaking. This company is excellant!

We used Francesco. If you do a search you will find many many people who were very happy with his tour.

Website: http://www.francescomarrapese.com/

He was professional, friendly and he has lived in the area his whole life. His mercedes van is spotless and he is a very patient driver. You will feel very safe in his care on the twists and turns of the amalfi coast.

Whoever you choose you will have a wonderful day - no doubt about it.

Could not agree more we had a driver named Nello and a guide with the name of Franco

The best driver and guide you could ask for

600 Euro for the van for the day 100 euro for 2 hour private tour

Romeinlimo is the best company hands down in Italy

Texancruzer...I think we will be using APTours in Nov for our tour from Naples. I read in one of your posts that you didn't spend any time in Sorrento, just caught the ferry back to Naples. Was this your choice or did you just run out of time?

In your opinion, what's "not to be missed" in Ravello, Positano and Amalfi?

Thanks for your input.
