Just back Carnival Spirit. Homewood Suites and Avis deals!

We just got back last night and we're very tired so I won't go into much detail now. For those who got the 'deal' at Homewood Suites in Anchorage, yes, they honored it. We had a two bedroom, two bath suite for $70 plus taxes. Also, some may remember the controversial discount code for Avis in Skagway? That was honored as well. We ended up with a full size (Impala) for $30 for the day. So to the 'alleged' Avis employee who posted here stating that we were going to get busted-WRONG!

As we are on the 5/27/09 northbound Spirit cruise (not as far away as it seems right now!), I am really looking forward to your review! Lately I've read reviews stating the Spirit is looking tired and needs renovation?

Also, I plan to rent a car in Skagway so can you bring me up to date on the "controversial" discount code? Thanks!

No one we spoke with, while we were on board, thought the Spirit looked tired and in need of renovation, though I think it's getting one in January? Something like that. The Champion Bar has these terrible hokey figures of FORMER superstar athletes painted on the wall and they were in desparate need of a touch-up, paint-wise!

Welcome back! Just curious, what is the Homewood Suites "deal" that you mentioned? The price was great and I was wondering how you got it?

I think it was a "glitch" on their web site last fall. They were offering a 2-bedroom, 2 bath suite for $72 plus tax! The same thing happened the year before with the Hilton in Anchorage. I had the "romance package" booked for $46/night! Unfortunately, I changed the itinerary when we changed ships, and was unable to take advantage of it.

I do plan to write a review here in the next day or so when I get a chance. I didn't think the Spirit looked run down or tired at all. She appears to be very well maintained and is lovely. Here is what I did notice-carpet in hallways is a kind of light blue and there were a few stains here and there, but not bad at all. Actually that is all I really noticed. Everything looked fine. She is very clean. I understand that Spirit is supposed to go to dry dock sometime before your cruise-so no worries.

The controversial code was one I found on a different website. I called Avis and was told it was an Avis corporate discount that anyone could use. I posted it here and someone claiming to work for Avis appeared and said we would be reported for inappropriately using a discount code. Some people who used the code posted here that they could no longer access their online reservation and were given the message to call Avis. My reservation said the same thing-only I didn't call Avis. We just showed up in Skagway and were given the car for $30 which is what it was with the discount code. I'm sorry I cannot find where I wrote the code down, but if you do a search in this forum you should be able to find it. It is supposedly a code that never changes so it should still be good.

Podie - I have read that the Spirit will be in drydock in March of 2009 and should look great for the Alaskan cruising season.

Lovesublime - I look forward to reading your review. Thanks for the tips already posted.

K.
