abbyndrewmom Posted October 16, 2004 #1 Share Posted October 16, 2004 I remember reading some place that either Cozumel or Playa del Carmen was a good place to buy Hammocks. Can anyone give me any information on this, where to buy them? cost? Are they locally made? Thanks, Allison
CozSally Posted October 16, 2004 #2 Share Posted October 16, 2004 Most of everything available for purchase in Cozumel is made somewhere else in Mexico. Hammocks are available from almost any tourist store. They range in size, material and quality, the better ones having a denser weaver which makes them stronger and more comfortable. While you can find one for $15, your better quality hammocks will run at least $30 and will last alot longer. For a bit of local flavor, find Zermat bakery on the corner of Calle 4 and 5 Avenida. Grab a pastry and a coffee to go, then wander directly across the street. The man who lives there makes hammocks for sale. He always has one in progress so you can see how it is woven. His are known to be of good quality. Enjoy!
abbyndrewmom Posted October 16, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted October 16, 2004 Thanks Sally, We are defintly looking for a good quality one and will happily spend the extra $$$ for it. I have looked at them in Pawley Island SC and they are well over $100.00 there. My husband and I like to find local goods so we will be sure to look for the local man. Any suggestions on local Mexicain food. Someplace where the locals would go? Allison
CozSally Posted October 16, 2004 #4 Share Posted October 16, 2004 For lunch any time between noon and 4pm on weekdays, try Sabores on 5 Avenida between Calle 3 and Calle 5. This is a Mexican home turned into a local eating establishment by the family that (still) lives there. A pitcher of the day's beverage, fresh corn tortillas, a choice of two soups and over ten entrees that change daily will cost you $4 per person. Sodas are available for $1 as well as desserts and coffee. The cuisine is true Yucatecan, indigenous to the area and different from the Tex Mex you get in the States. Delicious! abbyndrewmom Posted October 17, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted October 17, 2004 Thanks Sally, that sounds like excatly what we are looking for. We used to live in Las Vegas and had a housekeeper from Michocan who made the best handmade tortias & salsa. AT Christmas she would make tamales that were amazing!! We are not big fans of TexMex but really enjoy authentic Mexican food!!!
