Savannah - why not?

I know we have the smaller cruise ships, but I would like to see at least a RCCL or Carnival Fantasy class ship in here!

 

We have a HUGE port with masses of cargo ships coming in. Has anyone ever heard of talk to putting a ship in Savannah?

It would be GREAT if one of the cruise lines put a ship in Savannah !!!!! We're doing Carnival Fascination out of Jacksonville in Oct and spending our "pre nights" in Savannah. What a great place, it's fun, the food is good.....great prep for a cruise!!!!!

I couldn't agree more! We live in the SAV and would love to have a ship here. Granted driving to Jax doesn't get much easier, but a cruise ship would be great to have here (though we may need to dress up the port a little bit.)

We already have the tourist anyway, guess it would put that TINY casino boat out of business...LOL A guy might blow $300 on one sail on that thing. When I pay $300 total for a 5 night cruise.

Keep putting it on your comment cards. I did for years about Jacksonville. Talk to your city councel. Talk to the port authority of Savannah. I also love Savannah. Many great memories and some I don't even remember:eek: . Got to love Riverstreet:o .

Getting a commitment from a major cruise line to place one of their ships in a new homeport is a long and tedious process. Trust me when I say that it also requires a large monetary investment. The hardest part is convincing cruise line management that such a move is in their best interest. Sometimes, spending a lot of money on new facilities to attract ships doesn't work either. Houston just spent megabucks on a new cruise terminal and have yet to get a commitment for a cruise ship there. If someone wants to pick up the ball and run with it in Savannah, I sincerely wish you all the luck, but be prepared for a lot of disappointments along the way.

sadly enough up to the "bridge with no name" a fantasy class ship has just a little bit two much tonnage. at least that is what has been reported for years. i honestly think the problem is that savannah has not been dedicated to creating a sufficient dock. the one they use now is in the industrial area next to a massive amount of powerlines and other eye sores.

This Is Funny This Thread Comes Up Today, My Wife And I Were Just Talking About Taking A Vacation In Savannah Next Year After Our 6/7/09 Cruise. I Visited Savannah By Myself About 5 Years Ago When I Worked For The Government And Doing Some Training For My Work In Augusta, And I Loved Savannah. I Would Love To See A Cruise Ship In Savannah, Even Though We Live In Texas And Usually Cruise Out Of Galveston, I Would Not Mind Driving To Savannah And Spending A Few Extra Days There Before A Cruise. I Know I Could Also Drive To Different Areas In Florida And Catch A Cruise But I've Been To Florida Several Times (for My Work) And It Just Not A Place I Would Like To Vacation.

We would love it if they would have cruises out of Savannah. We live in Grovetown, which is a small town right outside of Augusta, Georgia, and Savannah would not be that long of a drive for us, it would take us 2 hours and 45 minutes or so at the most! That would be awesome, it would sure beat flying to Miami or Lauderdale, way cheaper! Funny this should come up, we were talking about our next vacation and daydreaming that they would sail out of Savannah just yesterday, talk about ironic!

Also, one problem might be that there are not a ton of flights from anywhere other than ATL/DFW/NY Area. Check it here

from google earth that shows "downtown" Savannah is close to 20 miles inland thru "narrow" straights. I have been to Savannah many times (whoo-hooo green river!) and the river downtown would be "tight" for a cruise ship of any size.

I would love to see one come but it would be like leaving out of Tampa... 2 hours or more to the ocean. It would be a short drive and another alternative to the only ship leaving (sometimes) from Charleston.

You think leaving out of Tampa takes time to get to the Gulf...Try NOLA.

You probably just hit the nail on the head......Air transportation. It seems the cruiselines don't sail from anyplace that is lacking in that respect....;)

Thanks for posting the pictures, from what I saw on Yahoo maps, this channel leading into Savannah seem to be way too narrow in some areas and with too many turns. Its also 15 miles to the ocean. Its not going to happen in our lifetime.

There is a big discussion about a snafu that HAL had with Savannah. You can do a search on the HAL board to see all the comments. The gist is that the Port of Savannah is a really busy industrial port so it would take a lot of work to set aside part of the port for cruise traffic. It could be done but the port does not need the money.

Another problem would be commerical traffic in this narrow channel. A ship the size of the Holiday like 46,000 gross tons might have a chance.

There's a place just up the coast called Port Royal, South Carolina. It is the deepest natural port in the region. The state is looking for a buyer, and is currently empty. Any cruiseline interested?????? Only a few miles from the coast, and would pass right by Hilton Head.

Have you been to Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale? The entire property is Petroleum tanks and a Power Plant for Florida Power and Light. I don't think that is much different than Savannah.

What I would love is for Carnival or RCCL to put a decent ship in Charleston. I think it has a better chance than Savannah even though I'd be thrilled not to drive so long. Charleston already has the NCL Majesty but from the reviews and and the looks of her, I wouldn't sail on her unless I found a crazy deal. Our harbor is a lot bigger since it is one of the buisiest ports on the East (something like that) and that there have also been quite a few cruise ships that visit it like the Carnival Victory and such. It would be awesome!!!!:)

I take you are from Charleston? I live on IOP.

 

I would love for more ships to leave from here! That is my only concern with the NCL ship - heard bad reviews.
