On Board Credits

Who offers on board credits? Is it the travel agent or the cruise liner?

Is it true you can place a deposit with a TA and obtain an on board credit when you subsequently book a cruise?

Thanks in advance for any responses of your experiences of how you've obtained them.

There are many types of onboard credits. Sometimes the cruiseline will offer them in a special sail, some are offered by travel agents. There are also shareholder onboard credits offered by some lines for owning the cruiseline parent company stock. You can also receive an onboard credit for booking another cruise with the same line (or same company) while onboard. Also, you can purchase onboard credits on some lines, and you can receive onboard credits as a gift from family and friends.

Not true that you will automatically receive OBc's from your TA. Some of the large cruise only afencies receive "perks" from the cruiselines that they can pass on to you. Not ALL do. Some just offer a bottle of wine or something trivial as a thank you for your service.

Some cruiselines allow for discounts, so the TA will be able to lower the actual cost of the cruise. Others use OBC's as the incentive for you to book with them.

Research 2 or 3 agencies and see where you can get the most for your money. Make sure when you get quotes that you are comparing the exact cruise, room, date etc and include ALL taxes and fees in the total. Once you find an agent that has worked well for you, stick with them. You are always rewarded for your loyalty.
