Recommended Posts

Hello,

I will be crussing the saguenay river from 5pm to 9pm (so i says on the itinerary), does anyone has a previous experience on this, do you know it still be day light?

Thanks for any comments on this issue.

THANKS- I never would have thought the river was a "side" trip out of the way of our actual route from PEI to Quebec... must be worth seeing or a lot cheaper than docking somewhere along the way for a day...

Between the mouth of the river where the whales spend their summer and the fjords, it's worth every minute to see it.

There really isn't anywhere for the ships to dock in that area, other than a pier near Saguenay itself. The largest town on that part of the St-Lawrence is probably Rimouski. They don't have a pier that is large enough (I don't know the depth of the St-Lawrence at that point, to know how close the ship could even come to shore for tendering). The population is less than 40K people.

I've taken the ferry into Rimouski. The pier is pretty small. And honestly, there isn't that much to do, other than the Reford Gardens (Jardins de Metis in French). The water is really cold (it's definitely not the Baie de Chaleur!), so you better be REALLY hardy if you want to go swimming in the St-Lawrence.

Ephraim,

We're on the Royal Princess which will tender at La Baie from 9-5 in early October. I haven't been able to find out too much about what is available to do on our own so we're considering either a walking or hiking tour at the National Parc - do you have any input for us?

I haven't gone as far inland as La Baie and Saguenay (Chicoutemi). I only went as far as a cruise around Baie St-Catherine and then over to Tadoussac and Forestville to take the ferry accross to Rimouski.

But I can help direct you a bit with my Internet knowledge and my French. Might I suggest you first try to read about this region of Quebec called the Saguenay. The town has a tourism website at http://www.ville.saguenay.qc.ca/portail/wps/portal/tourisme?lang=en and the Quebec government's official website is at http://www.bonjourquebec.com/

Two years ago, we spent out summer vacation in the area (La Baie and Chicoutimi). We took a cruise on the Saguenay Fjord that left from La Baie and stopped at the site of the "Nouvelle-France". Website is: http://www.sitenouvellefrance.com/. It was very entertaining. Here is the website for the cruise company: http://www.croisieremarjolaine.com/ I'm not sure if they still do this in October.

If you have a chance to visit the village of "Sainte-Rose du Nord", it is a very picturesque village along the Saguenay. Website (only in French) is: http://www.ste-rosedunord.qc.ca/

La Baie is a nice small town to walk around in. There a museum that we visited there as well. (Sorry, can't remember the name).

Let me know if you have any questions.

Laura
