CarribeanOrBust Posted August 8, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 8, 2008 This may be a stupid question, but can you buy travelers checks with a credit card? And if so, where?

UpstateCruizer Posted August 8, 2008 #4 Share Posted August 8, 2008 Im sure you can at your bank or credit union. Are you a AAA member? I'm kicking myself for not thinking of this myself!! We use our cc for everything possible to rack up those bonus points. We've never thought to use it for the traveler's checks though. Next time we'll have to remember to do that. My dh will love this idea since he loves the extra points.

Would it appear as a "cash advance" vs charge?
dlbutler5 Posted August 8, 2008 #6 Share Posted August 8, 2008 Why would you buy travelers cheques with a CC? If it is for the cruise just use the card. Travelers Cheques often are hard to use in port, they get too many fraudulant ones.
candigirl41 Posted August 8, 2008 #7 Share Posted August 8, 2008 I always use TC's I cash them at the pursers desk for port. Candi
bankerbabe Posted August 8, 2008 #8 Share Posted August 8, 2008 I always use TC's I cash them at the pursers desk for port. Candi Us too. It's much safer than carrying all of the cash that you would need, and it's a convenient budgeting tool. It's also cheaper than using a foreign ATM or, God forbid, the high-priced ATM onboard. Hawaii697 Posted August 8, 2008 #10 Share Posted August 8, 2008 Is there a fee to cash them in on the ship? There is no fee to cash them on board, however, make sure you don't fill in the payable to. I filled out the check the way I normally would and the purser would not cash it. They need to handstamp the name Carnival Cruise Line in the payable to. Also, best place to cash is in the casino. Lines are generally long at the pursers desk.
Flip2cruise Posted August 8, 2008 #11 Share Posted August 8, 2008 Is there a fee to cash them in on the ship? No http://www.carnival.com/CMS/FAQs/Travelers_Checks.aspx Traveler's Checks can be cashed on board at the Information Desk; since Traveler's Checks are considered as cash, there is no fee for this check cashing service and no limit to the dollar amount cashed. Canadian Traveler's Checks can be cashed on board at the Information Desk at the current exchange rate.
big_duck Posted August 8, 2008 #12 Share Posted August 8, 2008 I'm pretty sure a purchase of TC's by credit card would be treated as a cash advance which normally means the interest clock will start ticking at the moment of purchase. I don't think even Carl Malden uses 'em anymore.
fat_joe Posted August 8, 2008 #13 Share Posted August 8, 2008 A number of banks in my area have recently stopped selling travelers checks. There have been too many problems with fraud and TC's being used for money laundering. With debit cards and credit cards becoming so common, paper checks will soon be a thing of the past. It will probably be awhile before that happens. Every time I go to AAA there is always a line of people getting TC. They have a desk where all the person does is sell them. There are lots of people that wont easily migrate to the credit/debit cards for travel. So expect to see TC used for some time.

Our balances are paid in full annd we just use them for the points and cashback incentives. We have no problem getting traveler's checks from our credit union. We prefer them since it means we don't have to travel with a large sum of cash, we do not have an ATM card and I prefer to not use our credit cards in foreign countries. Works great for us :)
