as41shots Posted August 9, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 9, 2008 ... out of Aruba, Bonaire, Dominica, Grenada or St. Maarten? We'll be doing a Xmas cruise on Celebrity Summit out of San Juan, and want to rent a fishing charter at one of our stops. I posted this yesterday on the individual port boards. Any thoughts? Thanks. FASTEDDYS Posted August 9, 2008 #2 Share Posted August 9, 2008 Last December we chartered a boat in Aruba. Caught Wahoo, but there's a chance for Blue Marlin too. We chartered with Capt. Eddy on the J-String, a 36ft. Crusader. Very reasonable rates. If you're interested his email is:j_string32@hotmail.com. Also fished Puerto Rico in November and caught a 600# Marlin (unusual for November). I haven't fished any of the other Islands but I hear that Granada is good. Tight Lines! Hypo Posted August 9, 2008 #3 Share Posted August 9, 2008 A year ago in St. Maarten our son went out on a charter boat for a 5 hour fishing excursion. They never got a bite, and he never even got to hold a pole. What a waste of time and money. Hypo

Was it the type of charter with 20 people, or was it a private charter with 4-6? I just want to know what to stay away from.
FinelyCruising Posted August 9, 2008 #5 Share Posted August 9, 2008 When big game fishing, you will not be holding a pole until you have a hit and then you will take the pole to reel the catch in.
as41shots Posted August 9, 2008 Author #6 Share Posted August 9, 2008 Good point, FC. If they were reef,or bottom fishing, one would have a pole, drop the line, hope for a hit, reel up and try again. But with trolling it is another story.
janandjon Posted August 9, 2008 #7 Share Posted August 9, 2008 Thats why they call it 'FISHING' not "CATCHING":D
FinelyCruising Posted August 9, 2008 #8 Share Posted August 9, 2008 Half the time it should be called HUNTING.:D
as41shots Posted August 27, 2008 Author #9 Share Posted August 27, 2008 Well, we picked Aruba as our fishing location, and will be on either the Mahi-Mahi or Kepasa. We have a tour scheduled in Grenada, so only 3 more ports to plan for. :D
Denisern2 Posted August 27, 2008 #10 Share Posted August 27, 2008 I like to just fish off the back of the ship. That way the staff baits your hook and you contribute to dinner.
tbelian Posted August 27, 2008 #11 Share Posted August 27, 2008 I like to just fish off the back of the ship. Actually, I have found that tubing or skiing is a lot of fun from the stern also. What a wake! .....:D

FinelyCruising Posted August 27, 2008 #13 Share Posted August 27, 2008 OK...so when you are docked in port save your $$$ and just drop the line off your balcony. It's like being on a fishing boat. :D
janandjon Posted August 28, 2008 #14 Share Posted August 28, 2008 Half the time it should be called HUNTING.:D The only thing wrong with HUNTING--it's tough to do CATCH and RELEASE!
FinelyCruising Posted August 28, 2008 #15 Share Posted August 28, 2008 The only thing wrong with HUNTING--it's tough to do CATCH and RELEASE! Noooooo....HUNTING is actually finding the Honey Pot. :D Catch and Release is the Law of the Land in the area that is being fished, and is one that I always happily observe without hesitation.;)

FinelyCruising Posted August 28, 2008 #17 Share Posted August 28, 2008 We were in Manzanillo....the Billfish capital of the world. They even have a huge Billfish as a monument in the town there....well we were out with high hopes, and not one even jumped out of the water. Now I told a friend of mine about Gulp bait...last week he was fishing in the surf here in NJ with the Gulp and found the Honey Pot, he caught 20 Fluke. Hunting is finding where the are, they just don't ever seem to come to me no matter how times I whisper to the water....here fishie, fishie, fishie!
