Before walking around Progreso, it's also fun to take a quick double-decker bus ride around town to orient yourself. You can pick up the bus at the Casa de Cultura, where the shuttle from the ship drops you off. You can see a map of Progreso here: http://www.yucatantoday.com/maps/eng-progreso-map.htm

We were there last Feb and did the same thing that others have recommended. Took the double decker bus tour of the town then just walked the streets and the Malecon. As hdawson said, it's "old Mexico." Great people, great food and great atmosphere.........:)
