missmlt Posted August 18, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 18, 2008 Anyone have experience with the beach clamshell on Princess Cays? Is it just a beach chair and umbrella? If you don't do a clamshell are there other places to sit/camp out with shade? Are there any perks that come with it? Thanks!
LuvTheGoodLife Posted August 18, 2008 #2 Share Posted August 18, 2008 No perks with the clamshells- just coverage from the sun. There are some palm-thatched palapas (sp?) (shaded areas) available on a first-come first served basis that offer shade as well.
caber Posted August 18, 2008 #3 Share Posted August 18, 2008 If these are the things we sat under two years ago they were like a half igloo tent round the sunbed. It was too hot under them, just like sitting in a tent in the sun. You couldn`t stay under for long. I don`t think we paid for them at that time. pungo3 Posted August 18, 2008 #4 Share Posted August 18, 2008 No perks with a clamshell at all. There is limited shade on Princess Cays so other than renting a Cabana, the clamshell is your best bet. Enjoy your cruise.
Marie-Claude Posted August 18, 2008 #5 Share Posted August 18, 2008 Hi there! This is a picture of the Clamshells on Princess Cays - VERY HOT and STUFFY! The first time we went, we rented one and hardly spent anytime in it... way too hot! The second time, we went ashore early and found a great spot on the other side of the bridge (as you get off the tender, cross the bridge to the right and walk a bit) - lots of palm trees with little palapas, thatched roof with a little table. This was perfect! We had shade and air!! Much better than the clamshells... but you do have to go early to find a good spot!
NeurosurgeryNP Posted August 18, 2008 #6 Share Posted August 18, 2008 We rented the clamshell on our last cruise to PC. We liked the fact that we had shade and the option of sun - all we had to do was pull the chairs out of the clamshell. It was hot, however, it was much hotter out of the clamshells. IMO it was worth the $25.
Rare taxatty Posted August 18, 2008 #7 Share Posted August 18, 2008 I also think they were worth the $--we've got them twice. We didn't find them hot at all, maybe because each time we were in the front row closest to the beach--maybe better airflow?--no idea. Les
rianvi Posted August 18, 2008 #8 Share Posted August 18, 2008 If you planning on spending your time on the beach...in/out of the water and sun...the clam shell is the way to go. Certainly worth the money. And as posted before gives you an option of getting out of the sun. When we got our first one...we also found it very warm...until one of the more experienced cruisers told us to tilt it a bit forward. We did and it cooled off as this allowed some ventilation. Livabeth Posted August 19, 2008 #9 Share Posted August 19, 2008 If you reserve one through Princess, are they assigned when you arrive on the island or do you select one yourself??

vulcan500 Posted August 21, 2008 #12 Share Posted August 21, 2008 Loved the clamshells...well worth $ and we didnt' find it hot, either. Was not difficult to find one in a perfect (for us) location, as it is not crowded.
ashtyn Posted August 21, 2008 #13 Share Posted August 21, 2008 It does get hot in the clamshell. What we did was prop open the back at the sand and let the air circulate and it worked great. Plenty of ventilation otherwise it is to hot from the still air. The last time we just sat under one of the palm trees and had plenty of shade and breeze. Either way you can't loose, sitting on a beach enjoying the view:D
mtmorrisgirl Posted August 22, 2008 #14 Share Posted August 22, 2008 The clamshell is well worth the $$. The last time we went to Princess Cay all of the clamshells were full and we were not allowed to pick our own. We were directed to ours by a member of the beach staff. We did the same as some others suggested -- prop the clamshell up slightly in the back and the breeze will blow right through. Enjoy!
Woodmnky Posted August 23, 2008 #15 Share Posted August 23, 2008 It was a little stuffy (even in January), but as someone with fair skin the protection from the sun was well worth it.
