mpocd Posted August 26, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 26, 2008 Hi, We had a inside cabin on the Riviera Deck, Carnival Valor (yes, as low as you can go!). Ship departs this weekend. The price dropped and we contacted Carnival. They offered us a free upgrade to a 5A cabin - Outside porthole. We would be one deck higher, but in the front instead of rear of the ship. The 5a has 220 square feet (our 4A has 185 square feet). Instead of getting a $100 refund, we took the upgrade. Was that a good/bad decision? Thanks! BigDfromTN Posted August 26, 2008 #4 Share Posted August 26, 2008 For me it would be a good deal. Port Hole/Bigger room VS IS smaller W/$100......... some would prefer the inside but I think most would agree with you!!!
dan40 Posted August 26, 2008 #5 Share Posted August 26, 2008 Anytime the category changes it is a real upgrade. 5A's are fun cabins. Unlikely it is actually 220 sf. 5A's are non-standard cabins and can be MUCH larger. Dan
firefly333 Posted August 26, 2008 #6 Share Posted August 26, 2008 We paid $80 to upgrade to a OV on a 4 day cruise. An obstructed OV at that. $100 on a 7 day is pretty good to me. We started off cruising in a 5A on Ecstasy. Anything where I can see out is good.
dan40 Posted August 26, 2008 #7 Share Posted August 26, 2008 This was NOT an upsell. This was a free upgrade. The OP had the choice of a $100.OBC OR the upgrade. He chose the upgrade, no money out of pocket. Dan
Gayle V Posted August 26, 2008 #8 Share Posted August 26, 2008 I agree with the others. The daylight from the port hole is definitely worth more than the $100, not to mention the increased square footage. Congratulations.

ManyMore Posted August 27, 2008 #10 Share Posted August 27, 2008 I would have done it for free as well.
mamasue Posted August 27, 2008 #11 Share Posted August 27, 2008 Yes I'm sure you made the right decision. Porthole cabins are nice.... we got upgraded to one on the Imagination last year. It's good to have some daylight!!
Payd Posted August 27, 2008 #12 Share Posted August 27, 2008 Sounds like a great deal. We have an inside and a balcony booked for our March cruise. $500 difference!
RizzoLee Posted August 27, 2008 #13 Share Posted August 27, 2008 That was our first cabin as well - a 5A on the Fantasy. Nice cabin, but bring ear plugs - you might hear the anchor in the morning. :)

Nice cabin, but bring ear plugs - you might hear the anchor in the morning. :) Good to know! We were also upgraded from an Inside Guarantee to a 5A on our upcoming October cruise :D No extra $
love2relax Posted August 27, 2008 #15 Share Posted August 27, 2008 You got a great upgrade: not to mention that at least you're one deck higher. I personally dislike being on the Riviera deck, and I have stayed in a 5A on the main deck on another ship and enjoyed it (even though I almost always go for a balcony). When they dropped the anchor it sounded AND felt like a runaway train was going thru my bunk!:D Dan
mpocd Posted August 28, 2008 Author #17 Share Posted August 28, 2008 Thank you, everyone, for the answers. Given Gustav and Hanna it may well be that the Valor (8/31) has an extra sea-day thrown in. If so, it will be nice to have the extra space of a 5A cabin and the portholes to look out. C.Y.O.C. - and have fun doing it!!
