I have a hard time getting motovated to exercise. Has anyone had any positive results with dieting alone-no exercise?

I need to loose 15 lbs in 8 weeks.

I started out with the SlimFast plan and lost about 15 lbs in 8 weeks or so. This also was without exercising. I followed it EXTREMELY strictly though and went to the SlimFast website for support and ideas. After that, I kind of hit that "weightloss plateau" and decided to try and fit some exercising into my schedule...but yes, it is possible to lose weight without exercising...just not as quickly and effectively.

You have to expend more calories than you take in to lose weight--that's just a simple fact! If you don't do some exercise, and simply restrict your intake, you're going to be hungry all the time! Once you hit your target weight (if you do) you're going to gain it (and some) right back, if your muscles aren't used to burning more calories!

You don't have to go to a gym--do push-ups on your kitchen counter (leaning against it--not on top of it!!!), walk across your house a couple times a day doing squats! Little, quick things that your body isn't used to will really "kick-start" your calorie burning! Once you start, and start seeing some progress, it does become easier, and you'll WANT to do more!

Those are all really cool ideas :D

I'm not exercising yet (have stuck to my plan for 12 weeks) and have lost 12 lbs. My mom lost weight on WW back in the 70's without exercise, too. I know other people who do the same. I'm not saying that exercise is not good for you, but I don't want to depend on it for my weight loss. By getting my eating habits in control, I know what it takes to fuel my body and continue to lose weight. I get somewhere around 1200-1300 calories per day, and more once a week as my "splurge" day. When I begin exercise, that will definitely speed things up, I know. With exercise, I can count on about 2 lbs. per week, on average. Without it, 1 lb. I'm getting plenty to eat and am not hungry, except on rare occasion I'll have those days where I want to eat and eat and can't figure that out. If you are in your 20's or 30's, you should be able to change your eating and drop 15 in 8 weeks. I did it in a month, back in my late 20's.

Without excersice you will lose muscle. Building muscles will make you burn more calories at a resting level. I'm not talking about body-building bulking up either. Just plain old working the muscles. All the above suggestions will help with that. Eating the right foods will give you better results as well. Calories in/calories out is true but you need to take in calories from good nutrition.

Lynn, that is a very good point about making the calories you take in count. There are foods that have the same calorie count but some have no nutritional value. I know I could go on a pringles & chocolate diet and lose weight. But it is not just about losing weight. It is about building muscle tone and keeping our bodies healthy. I have friends that are just turning 50 and some of them are not very healthy. Who wants to start having health issues so young when you can take control over so much of it.

ok off my soapbox!

I hate exercising, but just put my fitness plan together just yesterday. I lost 15lbs in one month on South Beach with no exercise, but that's about to change. So with no exercise starting from 7/12 to now I've lost 28lbs. I'm thinking I could have lost more if I did exercise.

I use SparkPeople to get motivated. I use their Fitness feature where they come up with a workout plan for you and they show you with the little demos how to do those exercises. You can even print the pictures out too. I do the exercise and check it off as added and I got my exercise in.

Try going up and down and the stairs nostop for 10 minutes as cardio and then increase that. The specialist on SP say to always move your arms when doing cardio so don't forget that. There is one cool video (the most watched on SparkPeople) that you can do w/o any equipment and it gets your heart pumping. Here is the link: http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness_articles.asp?id=1038 . Best of all you can do it all at home. :D

I look at it this way: When I exercise I feel so much better and healthier. I sleep better. When I sleep better, I make better decisions during the day. I've found exercise to be MORE important than the "watching what I eat" part. I don't really "diet" as I don't restrict anything. I find though that i'm not as hungry or obsessive about food when I exercise regularly.

A lot has to do with your metabolism and age. Your metabolism slows with age so it's even more important for those of us who are "getting up there" to get the body moving as much as possible every day.

If you can't find time for health now, you'll have to find time for illness later.

Diet is the single most important factor for weight loss. In order of importance it's:

1. Diet

2. Weight Lifting

3. Cardio

You can absolutely see excellent weight loss results if you follow a healthy cutting program. Be sure you dont starve yourself. The key is to eat small meals and eat them often. Ideally you will want to incorporate some form of lifting routine into your program as to minimize lean muscle reduction as most people will lose some lean mass along with fat while cutting.

Yes you can lose weight without exercising. My girlfriend lost 35 lbs with out taking the first walk.....the results now she is a skinny flabby person (her words not mine) Exercise will not only help you to lose faster, but it will help you get the type of body you want. Like the other posters have said, you don't have to go to the gym or run 3 miles a day. Just park as far as you can when going somewhere, lift soup cans as weights during commericals....and all the other suggestions posted here.

Okay off my soap box now ;)
