dmk Posted August 28, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 28, 2008 For anybody that is booked on Zoom. Hundreds of travellers stranded as high fuel prices claim Zoom Airlines as a victim. The soaring cost of fuel and a weakened economy claimed its first Canadian airline casualty Thursday after discount carrier Zoom Airlines suspended its operations, stranding hundreds of passengers in Canada and Britain. Susan-M Posted August 28, 2008 #2 Share Posted August 28, 2008 That's too bad ... and too common of an occurrence these days. More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoom_Airlines p.s. smtcan Posted August 28, 2008 #3 Share Posted August 28, 2008 That is bad news. Zoom was our favourite airline for trips to UK - good service & good (must have been too good) prices. Sheila
c-legs Posted August 29, 2008 #4 Share Posted August 29, 2008 That is bad news. Zoom was our favourite airline for trips to UK - good service & good (must have been too good) prices. Sheila ''must have been too good "" :  BINGO !!! You nailed it right on the head ! This is all too familiar, and sadly so....With the monstruous hike in fuel prices over the past 10 months, there is not one single carrier ( marine, rail, roads, air ) that can stomach all of it without cutting costs drastically ( and brace yourself for outcries from all involved ) , raising fares & prices sharply ( and brace yourself for outcries from all involved ), assessing fuel surcharges ( and brace yourself for outcries from all involved ), operate at a new level of losses ( and brace yourself...you know what I mean), cut 1000s of staffers ( and brace yourself,etc,etc,..) OR SIMPLY THROW IN THE TOWEL !!! ( and still, outcries have been heard over entire continents when this has happened 8-9 times this year in North America alone !! ). Unless some miraculous light bulb-equipped person has a solution that will allow the fuel cost increase to simply disappear magically without any impact whatsoever, then: let's brace ourselves: we haven't seen the last of failed carriers . Sad and regrettable as it is. ;)
Schplinky Posted August 29, 2008 #5 Share Posted August 29, 2008 When these things happen, I feel so sorry for the people who must be stranded mid-trip. I can't imagine arriving at the airport only to discover my airline doesn't exist anymore.
RickT Posted August 30, 2008 #6 Share Posted August 30, 2008 It is too bad that we are losing another option to fly to Europe however many of the european airlines are definitely giving Air Canada a run. We flew to Europe on Swiss and thought it was fantastic. They beat Air Canada's price by over $500. I do feel bad for the staff and passengers of Zoom but hate it when a company blames something like oil prices for their going out of business. While it certainly hits the bottom line, many other companies and airlines are making adjustments for it and continue to do business. My guess is this issue was much bigger than just the price of fuel. Here's hoping everyone gets their money back and are able to continue their travels as close or originally planned as possible.
