RMS Rhone Wreck

The Flying Pirate

Recommended Posts

For those of you going to Tortola if you are a diver or working on becoming a diver don't miss the chance to dive on the wreck of the RMS Rhone. Sunk in a hurricane Oct 29th, 1867 off Salt Island, the Rhone has become one of the most famous shipwrecks in the Caribbean. The bow is in about 80 feet of water and is largely intact and the stearn is shallower and a mess but offers a lot to see. The cruise tours do a two tank dive on the wreck, and I highly recommend it. I had to start a thread about this excellent dive since it wasn't mentioned anywhere.

The RMS Rhone was a steel packet ship built in England in 1865, she was 310 feet long, and had a 40 foot beam. The ship featured the second bronze ships propeller ever made which is intact on the wreck's stearn section.

The stern section comes fairly near the surface, shallow enough to allow snorkelers to get a good view of the wreck.
