harbormaster Posted August 30, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 30, 2008 Has anyone had experience with the trains from Hong Kong to Shanghai? We would take a "soft sleeper" for 2 for the overnight train, but wondered if anyone has taken it. We don't expect European standards but would like to know if it is safe, if it is reliable and also if the scenery merits the time. We are taking a Viking River cruise Shanghai to Beijing and thought we might put a trip on to Hong Kong prior to the cruise. Or, should we just fly from Hong Kong to Shanghai? Any comments would be much appreciated
jcjbloca Posted September 4, 2008 #2 Share Posted September 4, 2008 I have not done the HK to Shanghai train but did take the Shanghai to Beijing ride last year. Its an experience. You need to take a cabin instead of the soft sleeper if you want some degree of comfort. Cabins are four bunk beds and small, not very comfortable. At least you dont have to listen to the loud snoring of your fellow soft sleeper passengers all night long. I would compare it similar to trains in Egypt (Cairo to Luxor) and better than those in India. If you are adventuresome go for it (and bring your own snacks/sandwiches/drinks from HK). Flying would be so much easier and not give you a bad start on your otherwise fantastic trip ( I did the Viking Shanghai - Yangtze- Beijing trip and it was fantastic).
