marie61 Posted December 3, 2008 #2 Share Posted December 3, 2008 I'm still dreaming of going but my friend who is female went in July 08. It was VERY HOT but if you are prepared for it, sightsee very early and hang around pools in the afternoon, you can still enjoy yourself. My understanding is that they take tourist security very seriously--lots of guards, blockades at big american hotels, armed convoys guide cruise ship buses from Port Said to Cairo and back. This is because there have been a few serious terrorist attacks in the past and they are being cautious. I would not allow that to deter me from sightseeing on my own in cities. I do not know if you are female, but don't do this trip without a male companion. My friend had a terrifying experience when she was without her husband one day. Women are not regarded the same way as in North America.
eleanordew Posted December 5, 2008 #3 Share Posted December 5, 2008 When we were in Egypt several years ago, our tour had an armed guard at the front of the bus throughout the trip. Nothing happened -- I never felt threatened at all -- but it was nice to know that there was someone there to protect us if something did happen. Our bus had police escorts when we moved from one place to another. There are also tourist police at all the major archaeological sites. PS. I will say that the only time I really felt in danger was crossing the street in Cairo. LOL
CAPinBoynton Posted January 2, 2009 #4 Share Posted January 2, 2009 We returned from Egypt September 20, 2008. We were on an Amadeus tour. We had two big buses and each one had an armed guard onboard. He was dressed in a regular suit / tie not a uniform and he had on a shoulder holster. There are tourist security guards everywhere, and you will feel totally safe in the tourist areas. However, we were warned not to stray. The group that was kidnapped last Sept. were not in a tourist area of the country. Females should definitely not venture off on their own, and while in large cities such as Cairo, girls should dress conservatively. As to the heat, I was born and have lived all of my life in the South U.S. I am used to heat and humidity. We were in Egypt 9/9 to 9/20, and I suffered. I would have enjoyed myself much, much more if I had gone during prime season. Anyway, if you would like to see plenty of pictures and read our review, just go to www.thepreismans.com. Enjoy. pacmom Posted January 2, 2009 #5 Share Posted January 2, 2009 The heat in Egypt in the summer months is a searing, desert heat. You will not want to be out on the top deck. By April it will be over 100 degrees. The further south you go, the hotter it will be. If you don't have to travel in the summer, don't. We were there in late Feb. into March. It was still hot in the afternoons. The mornings were pleasant. You can survive it, but will you endure more than you enjoy? Safe travels.
