10th P&O Cruise Upgrade of Cabin

Could I ask all you seasoned P&O cruisers out there, if there is any truth in the rumour that you are automatically upgraded in cabin status for your 10th cruise with P&O.

As somebody who books his cabin very early to get as close as possible to where he wants to be, would I want this? unless it was a suite perhaps!!!

Can't see it somehow!

Or is all just a rumour? I've heard it now several times on various forums but never onboard on ship.

Thanks for your help

Carl

No idea but can I ask a supplementary?

Our next 14-day cruise has a 'guaranteed' grade but no nominated cabin. Our TA said that this meant we would be open to an up grade whereas if we had a specific cabin then we would probably not.

Secondly, we were advised that if offered an upgrade CHECK the deck plans as you might go from the best at one grade to the lowest of the next. This happened to our travel companions and it was a dog.

Then we also heard that people on the 'last' Southampton-Southampton cruise were offered the subsequent Trans-Atlantic cruise for £300! Now there is a thought. Plan ahead. Book the right cruise. Arrange you affairs so you can take an extra 2-weeks off.

I suppose that's possible: they've guaranteed a cabin of at least a certain grade, and if there are non of them left, then they've got to go up. But how often it happens, I wouldn't know. It's also the case that a 'guaranteed' grade cabin would be met by giving the passenger the noisiest, most inconveniently-located cabin, of the right grade, on the ship - you know, the one below the men's toilets just outside the casino, right by the stairs & lift, and next to the main waste pipes.....

On my second P&O cruise (in 1995) I was given, at the time of booking, a 2-grade upgrade. This was part of their marketing promotion to prevoius customers that year.

Since then, and well over 10 cruises later, we have never been offered a free upgrade.

Who starts these rumours?

Albert.

Don't you get special deals/upgrades anyway for being a past cruiser with pando?

We have been upgraded on all our past cruises - inside to outside (twice), outside to good balcony, lower deck to upper deck (good position), the last on a gty. We chose our cabins carefully for both our future cruises, booking well in advance, as you say would we want an upgrade unless it was to a well postitioned suite, is this likely?

St Lucia, you last post conflicts somewhat with your previous post.

I agree there is a risk of getting the worst cabin at the guaranteed level. Equally, as a Portunus member with 4 cruises booked after the guaranteed grade cruise I would be appalled if we were shafted.

We have two shots however. We are on the same ship in 3 weeks time so will be able to eyeball the hotel manager. Our TA has just had 12 bookings as a result of our custom.

Thanks for your response I think the well travelled Dai B has enlightened us!

Never been offered an upgrade in my 8 P&O Cruises as I've always requested a particular cabin and turned down the Travel Agent when offered should an upgrade be available.

I was trying to be a little to clever I think, by booking a high tariff balcony cabin for our 10th crusie and the only upgrade would then be a suite.

But looks it what I've heard on some cruise sites (cruise connections included) is a load of tosh!!

Take Care

Carl

Carl, indeed, yes to both.

We booked the Artemis cruise quite late (for us) as we spotted it was good value for money and coincided with 2 anniversaries. My daughters have bought some surprise package, I know not what, for my wife.

The Oriana cruise is an unscheduled weekender that went on sale on Monday. We have 4 cabins booked so far. We wanted to see Oriana but her prices are usually too high given the scarcity of balconies. We got 3 inside A-deck cabins at £235 each and £330 for a single. The rich kids get a window cabin for £300 odd.

Why don'y you try for a back to back? Apparently, if you book two cruises back to back you get an extra 5% discount. Now you could argue that you should get this discount as you could not have done an original back to back as this cruise only arose on Monday.

Roy,

Don't tempt me!

Unfortunately my wife is a member of the emergency services, and has only been allowed Easter off as its her 50th Birthday.(booked 4 years ago).

I've cooked Christmas Dinner 18 out of 20 years married (apart from gravy! still not trusted).

Better not push it, but thanks for the info much appreciated.

Wow booked 4 years ago, that's committment. I thought we had booked our Solstice cruise early at 19 months. How did you know what was available? We want to go March 2010 for my DH's 60th and are unable to get details yet.

Unfortunately it was my wife's leave in work we had to book well in advance.

We had to wait until last April with the Preview edition before we knew where we were going.

Hope that explains

WE have been upgraded once with P & O.....we booked a mini suite on a Panama Canal cruise on Arcadia in March 07 and they rang and offered us a suite...well they offered us a choice of 3, but we chose the suite that was nearest to the original mini suite we had chosen...ended up on the Singapore Suite and it was lovely...

We also got upgraded way back in 2002 when we did a transatlantic from Southampton to New York on QE2....cant remember what grade we booked (haven't been on her since) but they upgraded to a Princess grade cabin...basically, instead of eating in the Caronia we ended up eating in the Princess Grill.....

Have never been offered one since;)
