paws43tails Posted October 27, 2004 #1 Share Posted October 27, 2004 lst time on a princess cruise and the lst time i'm going to play the slots... how exactly does this work?... do you actually put quarters into the machines or do you 'buy' tokens with your sign and sail card? i've been saving my change, but certainly don't want to lug it onboard if i only have to cash it in anyway... thanks! spongerob Posted October 27, 2004 #2 Share Posted October 27, 2004 You have to use tokens for anything 25 cents and up. The nickels are real nickels, not that I'd want to lug several dollars of them around in a suitcase.
isujim Posted October 27, 2004 #3 Share Posted October 27, 2004 Rob: Is there a charge if you get money in the casino and charge it to your on board account?? I believe I read there is but I just can't remember. Thanks

cruiserforlife Posted October 27, 2004 #5 Share Posted October 27, 2004 Some may advise to play the first night when the slots seem to be "loosened up" to encourage further play for the remainder of your cruise... ...However,others may see this theory as pure hogwash... keukamom2 Posted October 27, 2004 #6 Share Posted October 27, 2004 Take all that change and change it into bills, all of the machines take regular 1, 5,10 20, 50 100 dollar bills. Much lighter when packing :)
Cruise38 Posted October 27, 2004 #7 Share Posted October 27, 2004 There is a 3% charge for any cash you get on your on board account.
nhcruiser Posted October 27, 2004 #8 Share Posted October 27, 2004 All of the slot machines will accept US$ 1, 5, 10 & 20's. Each machine will in turn post credits of you to wager. This is spelled sacrifice. Nickels work in the 5-cent machines but tokens are needed for those that require 25 cents and up. After you play a little while, you will need to deposit more currency and get more credits. Once in a great while, the machine may take pity on you and tempts you by spitting out a few token, tokens (hence the name token) that can be deposited back into the machine until all of your money is gone. Same principle on the nickel machines except that since you can only play 5 cents at a time the casino gives you a break and lets you wager 5 cents per line times 9 lines or 45 cents per pull. Some how people have figured out that this is cheaper than 25 cents per line times 3 lines or 75 cents per pull. Remember to keep telling yourself it is only nickels! All kidding aside, I recommend that you carry five and tens with you as many of the machines have trouble reading 20’s especially the new ones. Maybe a few fifties may be nice too! WCAB Posted October 27, 2004 #10 Share Posted October 27, 2004 As someone who makes about one trip a year to Las Vegas and have tried the Indian Casino's here in California, I have to say, I have almost given up on both. I do not like the paper in, paper out. I want to hear my coins (tokens) if I get a jackpot and for the last couple of years, my only winnings have been on the cruise ships. I know this could change but I have won enough, that I have brought back the same amount of spendable cash that I took with me at the beginning of the cruise. Good luck. West Coast Posted October 27, 2004 #13 Share Posted October 27, 2004
There is a 3% charge for any cash you get on your on board account.
They don't give you cash - they give you quarter tokens or dollar tokens. If you are playing the tables, they'll give you a slip of paper to give to the dealer and he'll give you chips. Of course, the tokens and chips can be converted into cash. Also, note, when you are playing in the slot or blackjack tournaments and want to charge the $20 to your account, there is no 3% s/c - so that's a good thing! sailinsal Posted October 27, 2004 #15 Share Posted October 27, 2004 Hi, just off last Sunday. I did play nickel slots. So here goes: I carry nickels in my purse rolled, and security stopped me in airports..............so to stop having purse checked take cash. I played the first sea day slot tournament which was great fun. Took $2o bill to cash window they gave me a card to give to casino person, who in turn put 300 points in machine, then I playe until points gone and numbers appeared; this went on for 3 hours and each persons numbers were put on a board with highest first until ten names down. So you watched and came back to slot area to see if you still were in standing of ten names. Then ten folks picked a machine and did same pulls with 30o credits and the first prized was $5oo! They had 3 slot tournments on our 17 day cruise. I won second prize twice playing. Gifts I got, a large canvas princess bag, hat, tee shirt, pen, cold can holder. 2 times. Now each time I put $2o on my credit they charged me sixty cents. I played other nicket machines and never came up a winner, think I spent 80 dollars in all. I had fun. Hope you do. TBetti Posted October 27, 2004 #16 Share Posted October 27, 2004 Hi, does anyone know if the casino is open on the Island Princess between the hawaiian ports? Thanks
paws43tails Posted October 28, 2004 Author #17 Share Posted October 28, 2004 sailinsal, that sounds like a lot of fun! thanks for the heads up about such an event! question though, because i've never done this before... do you get just one shot at playing those 300 points or can you play as many times as you wish to improve your score? not like i could spend more than 3 hours at one machine anyway, just curious... MissJennie_99 Posted October 28, 2004 #18 Share Posted October 28, 2004 I was on the Golden Princess playing the quarter slots and heard the ching ching of the coins hitting the bottom tray. I turned around and nobody was there. The coins were just coming out, a few minutes later some guy who also heard it walked up and took the coins out and left. And no, he wasn't a Princess employee. He probably laughed all the way to his room. :D
Cruise2End Posted October 28, 2004 #19 Share Posted October 28, 2004 My husband enjoys the casino while on board but he purchases the gift certificates for himself before the cruise - so he doesn't pay the 3%
jresmith Posted November 17, 2004 #20 Share Posted November 17, 2004 I read where you can give yourself a "gift certificate" for the casino and then you don't get charged the 3% casino cash advance fee. Is that the only way around the 3% fee. Also, if you were to deposit traveler's checks with the purser, could you draw on that cash without the 3% fee? If gift certificates are the only way, where and when do you get them? This will be our first Princess cruise, so any help is appreciated! Many cruises with Celebrity and they don't charge anything for cash advances in the casino (or at least they didn't last May). Thanks!
Solo Cruiser Posted November 17, 2004 #21 Share Posted November 17, 2004 Gift certificates can be purchased on the Princess web site, I think at the Onboard drop down menu. I carry travelers checks with me and cash them in at the purser's desk when I want to make a "deposit" at the casino, there is no charge for that. Sailinsal: I didn't have the same luck you did with the machines OR the same good sense you displayed at losing only $80. : )
juliejoe Posted November 17, 2004 #22 Share Posted November 17, 2004
If gift certificates are the only way, where and when do you get them?
They are left in your cabin. It's simple - just take the certificate(s) to the casino and trade them in for cash. DH & I sent each other 5 $100 certificates on our last cruise. You can order them by phone or fax and in different amounts. Julie
