MalNZ Posted September 25, 2008 #1 Share Posted September 25, 2008 We have a cabin held on the Sapphire Princess for the 23rd May from Whittier but was thinking that maybe this ship is too big to really get close to the glaziers? Would be interest to hear from anyone whom has been on this ship and also any other recommendations of which cruise line is the best for Alaska. There will be two adults and two children aged 6 and 7, so a kids club is quite important. Many thanks for you help. MalNZ:)
no fuss travel Posted September 27, 2008 #2 Share Posted September 27, 2008 You need a really small ship to get in super close to the glaciers. Those type of ships would not appeal to young ones. Nothing for them to do on them. We sailed Holland America last time and with binoculars you got an excellent view regardless. Some of ice falls are spectacular even without binoculars. Don't buy your binoculars on board ship though. We found them less expensive in Juneau, same ones. Enjoy your trip. It is fantastic. I have done it four times now and enjoyed it each time. vozzie Posted September 29, 2008 #3 Share Posted September 29, 2008 Did Alaska Northbound on Sapphire Princess. Got close enough to Glaciers to see all the detail ... without binoculars.
Druke I Posted September 29, 2008 #4 Share Posted September 29, 2008 The big ships are able to maneuver fairly close to the glaciers, affording a good view. With children, you probably are better off sailing on one of the larger ships - much more for the children to do, and better organized as well. MalNZ Posted October 1, 2008 Author #5 Share Posted October 1, 2008 What is the Veendam (Holland American Line) ship like? Is this suitable for children. Have received a really good quote, actually a savings of $1000.00 cheaper than the Princess.
no fuss travel Posted October 3, 2008 #6 Share Posted October 3, 2008 I liked the Veendam. They did have a children's program which the children seemed to really enjoy. The food was excellent too.
ILoveScotland Posted October 6, 2008 #7 Share Posted October 6, 2008 I was on RCCL's Radiance of the Seas a month ago, and that nearly 1000 ft. long ship got amazingly close to Hubbard Glacier. We definitely could see great detail without binoculars. It was great. It did help that there was little ice in the bay the day we were there.
