  • 3 weeks later...

We sailed on her second last voyage from Southampton to New York in August 1974 when we emigrated from England.

It was a wonderful experience though spoiled a little by the fact that the crew were on a "work-to-rule" because they had been told about the impending sale of the ship.

It was our last time on a ship voyage, a very different experience from cruising (our other voyages were on the SS Canton from Southampton to Penang and back in 1955 and 1956).

I was very saddened to hear that she ended up in a breakers yard in India.

We were in one of the top rear penthouse suites on the last trip of the S/S Norway. When leaving St. Thomas on the last leg home, another cruise ship departed at the same time. As we sailed Northwest from St. Thomas, the two ships raced side by side for about an hour then the other ship blew it's whistle and pulled away; unknown to us at the time, this was to be a final tribute. We had just arrived back in Miami when the boiler blew up that fateful day. Somewhere, I think I still have my room key.

She was a beautiful ship and had planned to sail her again.
