We did the walking tour in the morning a couple weeks ago and enjoyed it. In the afternoon we walked to the public beach on our way to Arawak Cay. After leaving the cruise terminal head to your right and follow the sidewalk past the British Colonial Hilton. You will not miss the beach if you are looking for it. No public bathroom or changing room on the beach itself. It is a public beach that is not terribly well maintained, but for a family looking to save some money they should enjoy their time there. We weren't in a hurry and didn't time the walk to the beach but I'd have to say it only took about 15 minutes to walk there. While I would not leave anything of value on the beach unattended we felt very safe there.

After our stop at the public beach for an hour we continued to walk to the Arawak Cay, which consist of about 10 seafood shacks where the locals like to eat. We walked past all of them and found a side street to watch the local fisherman catching conch which was interesting. The family might like to go there and if not purchase an entire meal for everyone maybe stop in one of the places and share some conch fritters or another dish just so they can sample some local food and talk to the locals that we found very interesting and friendly there. They could then either walk back to the ship or catch the public jitney #10 for one dollar a piece to take them back to the port.

Great tips - we used the same beach several years ago with our two little ones. It didn't make sense to pay a fee to use one when we had no idea if our visit would be 15 minutes or 3 hours (based on their temperments that day). We felt safe and while I wouldn't leave valuables on the beach, towels and sunscreen were fine.

This time we'll take your advice and combine our beach time with the walking tour. Thanks for the great idea.
