Elation 10/09

Today's sailing has been diverted due to Hurricaine Norbert. The Carnival Elation will instead have a sea day tomorrow, then visit Catalina Island and Ensenada.

This is sort of a "sneak preview" of the new itinerary to begin in February.

I will take you up on that!

What excursions did you do? I am booked on this ship in late January and am trying to decide what to do in both places.

What did you think of the ship>? any tips or advice? How was the food? Thanks in advance!

Hi - we did not do any shore excursions (been there, done that) so sorry - can't help you there -

Just walked around and did shopping, etc. in both Cabo and Ensenada - shopping in Ensenada better than last time we were there (years ago !) - prices seemed to be a little cheaper in Ensenada than in Cabo

The ship is a little gaudy in decor - the ceilings a little dark - I think they are going to "modern it up" a little when it goes into refurb in Feb - (so the room steward said) -

A little hard to navigate around - you have to go up to Deck 9 - for example - to make your way for and aft between the 2 dining rooms on Deck 8 -

Stateroom (Cat 12) was awesome - bedding was wonderful -

The food was OK - dessert was (of course !) wonderful - Lido deck pool grill was great for breakfast omelets and lunch burgers -

Water Slide hardly in operation at all - don't know why -

The 2 main singers in the night-time shows were the absolute worst we have ever heard on any cruise ship ! - Hypmotist (sp ?) one night was funny - but really rauncy on another night when he did "adults only" show.....

$10 Store on ship great place for scarves/shawls/purses - buy early - they ran out of several colors

ccliff5, what was there to do during the day sea days?

Wow - where to begin - there was plenty to do on At Sea days - you could always go shopping - or spend time (and money) in the casinos - there was ice carving to watch - the always popular (!!) hairy chest contest, horse racing, etc. to enter/watch - there were all sorts of trivia games - there was BINGO - you could always go to the gym or the SPA my favorite (!) - you could simply lay out in the sun around the pool -

Were you interested in something in particular ? - I didn't bring the CAPERS home with me - but I think I can remember most of the stuff that was offered.....

What... I did not believe what I read.. so I looked it up for myself. I am not pleased. So Carnival in its wisdom is going to take a always full ship that goes to Cabo and do the boring Catalina/ Ensenada run. If I wanted to do the 3/4 day Catalina/ Ensenada cruise I would go to LA and sail Paradise (which one a year or so I do) I adored the 5 day run to Cabo on the Elation. (That is why I did it over and over in Dec 5 times just this year.)

MY guess is they are trying to get people onto the 7 day cruise on the Splendor. In my case it will not work. The 5 day works great into my work schedule the 7 day does not. SD is a nicer (shorter) drive than LA too. For many people 5 day is a long weekend, a 7 day is a vacation. I think Carnival is messing up on this one. In my case they are loosing easy money.

I heard (from one of the dealers in the Casino on the Elation) that the reason for the change was that the Port of Cabo doubled the "docking" fee.....

Actually - let me correct myself - it's not the "docking fee" its more accurately the fee that the city of Cabo charges for using thier tender services.

There were 3 different cruise ships in port when we were there last week - the Carnival ship was the only one without it's own tenders - and had to use the services of the "local" tenders...

So why can't Carnival use a couple of its lifeboats for tenders like every other Cruise Line does? Seems like a good idea to me, if for no other reason it makes sure the lfieboats are in good operational condition and gives practice to the crew.
