submarine in New York harbor?

This is sort of off-topic, but since I know there are a number of New Yorkers who post on this board, I thought I would ask here. About a half hour ago, I went up to the roofdeck of my Manhattan apartment building to enjoy the view on such a beautiful morning. I can see the Hudson River several blocks to the west and I saw a tugboat plus two or three small Coast Guard boats (the little ones like harbor pilots uses in the Caribbean) escorting upriver what I am positive was a submarine. Does anyone know anything about this? Are they adding it to the Intrepid museum perhaps?

Don't know about submarines but if you look at the Pied Piper web camera it looks like an aircraft carrier docked in the slip usually used by the Dawn on Sundays.

there has always been a submarine as part of the Intrepid Museum. It has been at a pier in Brooklyn. I am sure they are just bringing it back...

The submarine is the USS Growler:

Yes, it is part of the Intrepid museum. If I recall correctly, it was moored next to the Intrepid before the aircraft carrier was removed for its refurbishment (recently completed). Presumably it too has now returned.

When we sailed on the Zenith in October 2005, the Growler was moored at Bayonne.

Funny--I cruised out of the West Side Passenger Ship Terminal in 2003 and 2004 and must have seen the submarine, but I don't remember it. Have never visited the Intrepid Museum, but plan to now that it will be re-opening.

There was a submarine at Pier 90 yesterday. Looked like it was flying an Irish or Italian flag.

Its Columbus day weekend....they might have been flying the Italian flag for that reason....and it was still probably the Growler... I am always amazed on how short service some ships have. This one was only 6 years. The USS massachusetts...a battleship...was also commissioned for less than 6 years too...

Thanks and that answers the question what aircraft carrier/helicopter carrier is in the harbor too!
