Another newbie question - dinner the first night

Probably a dumb question, but what the heck...

 

Our ship leaves at 5pm. Do they have the usual early and late dinner seatings that first night?

just dumb answers....in my experience yes they have both seatings as they need both to seat everybody....that is is you have conventional dining and not anytime dining

Sometimes for the first night a ship will just assign you an early or late seating and it will be open seating. Because of the change of normal schedule. But it will depend on the ship.

We cruised a "few" times on X and we were always assigned to our regular table on the 1st night. Some people don't show up the 1st night thinking that it's open seatting.

In my experience, if the ship sails in the afternoon, regular seatings apply. Open seating is used in the Caribbean for the San Juan late-night (e.g. 11 p.m.) sailings since so many cruisers are still in transit at dinner time. On those sailings, that's a great night to try out the Specialty dining since it's often half price for the first night and you won't miss sitting at your regular table.

Summit out of San JUan is open seating for the first night last march. We went to the Normandy and it was not half price.
