Pisa - walled city?????

I was just reading a ship review and the person talked about really enjoying the "walled city" of Pisa. That is the first time I heard that anywhere. Is it a walled city? We are going to Pisa and also Lucca - for the walls! :)

In the Rick Steves guidebook he does mention a walk on the walls in Pisa. If you look at the map of Pisa there is still a gate (Porta Leone) close to the Baptistery.

I do think the walled city referred to is Lucca.

Never heard of the walls either, and we spent several hours there recently.

Here is a watchtower in the walls of Pisa. We walked out of the Baptistry end of the Field of Miracles and as you head down toward the river there are several hundred yards of walls.

Pisa was once a walled city but most of the walls are gone. The true walled city in the area is Lucca. Beautiful city. Get a good map. It isn't a large city but given the street layout you will get lost.
