Hi coming down in February from Canada, we arent sure if we are driving or flying. When I try to put Mobile in for flight info it takes showes flights that are 10 hours long  any suggestions as to which airline to take from Detroit? Also what will the weather be like that time of year? And finally (ya right lol) what would be a good hotel for precruise night? Thanks for any help.

Delta is the main airline operating out of Mobile if that helps. In fact, we're flying through Detroit post cruise coming home from Quebec next Oct. It is about a 5 hour flight including layover in Atlanta. (Our flight leaves Detroit around 5:00 pm and arrives around 10:30 pm., and the total flight time from Quebec in over 11 hours.)

Weather in February can be anywhere from cold with highs in the 40s to warm with highs in the 70s. There is nothing predictable about Mobile weather except that it is unpredictable and can change dramatically in a few hours time.

What price range were you looking for in hotels? There are some more expensive hotels downtown near the dock. Other than the restaurants in the hotel, there are one seafood restaurant and bars are down there but you would have to walk several block with not very good lighting and very few people around at night. If you go through the tunnel from there, there are some seafood restaurants on the causway, but they wouldn't be open for breakfast. The area with the most hotels would be I-65 near Airport Blvd. That area has lots of choices at all price ranges, plenty of restaurants, and the main shopping areas. That would be a 20 - 30 minute drive to the docks depending on traffic. If you can't tell from the hotel's info where it is located, look for zip code 36608.

If you want anything more specific, let me know what kind of luxuries you want. Hope this helps.

One more thought:

We have to use Delta because we're using DH's frequent flyer miles, but I have heard that you get better prices and schedules flying out of Pensacola, FL or Gulfport MS. Both are about 60 miles from Mobile, so you would have to rent a car to get to Mobile from there, but it may give you more options.

We booked Delta coming from the West Coast and stopping in Mobile to visit friends. We had good connections, thru Dallas. Coming from East Coast, I am not sure. We had made a stop prior to Mobile for a Convention, in Va Beach & routed thru Atlanta, coming home we went straight to Dallas to Calif from Mobile.

I'm confused...it shows you're sailing on the Legend on 2/22/09...the Legend doesn't sail out of Mobile...are you doing another cruise on the Holiday in February?

At any rate, one thing to consider is this: Mardi Gras falls on 2/24/09 so you may have a hard time finding any rooms downtown...there are parades scheduled every night beginning on Feb. 13th and running all the way through Fat Tuesday. But if you can make it downtown to watch the parades, you're in for a treat...Mobile is the birthplace of Mardi Gras and we're proud of our heritage!

You might want to consider staying somewhere off of I-65 west of downtown or on the Eastern Shore east of downtown and across the bay. Either way, you're only 10-15 minutes from the cruise terminal.

You can pretty much count on it being cold in February...that's usually our coldest month. The only times I haven't been bundled up for Mardi Gras was when it fell in March.

Yeah Gulfport is always the cheapest for me when I go to the area.

Airtran is pulling out of Gulfport because the casinos are no longer subsidizing the airline, so you may need to check prices closely after the first of the year. Several airlines have pulled out of Gulfport recently. Airtran does still fly to Pensacola though.

I agree with cookingchick that February MAY be our coldest month, but when we scheduled cruises in February just to get away from the cold, it has been in the 60s or low 70s the whole time we were gone. It's always colder at night when most parades roll, but daytime temps CAN feel like spring is here. Some years December is our coldest month.
