Question about RCL policy

Okay, so I just booked a short 4 night coming up Dec 8th for my brother and I to go on and have some fun before a family reunion cruise coming up thereafter.

 

I booked on RCL, first time either of us had ever been on this line. I booked based on recommendations from some friends who swear by RCL (but haven't been in a long time).

 

It was also less expensive then the carnival alternative on the same route.

 

So I admit it.. this was an impulse buy, spur of the moment. I just got my booking email documents, and noticed the smoking policy on RCL. Bad since my brother chain smokes and I smoke as well.

 

The cabin is probably the worst part since we just booked an outside, and not the balcony.

 

From smokers recent experience on RCL, how tight are they on smokers? Can anyone give me details on how many areas of the ship can be smoked in? I don't mind smoking areas, and smoking/non-smoking cabins.. but had I known all cabins were non-smoking I would have probably paid more and gone on carnival.

 

At anyrate, hopefully the cruise will be great and it won't matter... but any advice or feedback on what to expect is appreciated.

 

The ship is the Monarch of the Seas on Dec 8th 08 out of Port Canaveral.

there are plenty of areas to smoke, the outside decks one side will be smoking and one side not. Never remember which but look for the ashtrays. Some of the bars allow it and the casino does.

BTW, can you still smoke in the cabins on Carnival?

Yes. On Carnival, smoking is permitted in cabins, on balconies, on one side of all outdoor decks and in the designated smoking sections in the bars and lounges and the casino.

 

No smoking permitted in any food venue, dining room, show lounges and anywhere designated non-smoking.

They are very strict. And, if you read the smoking policy posted elsewhere here, you'll see the financial consequences for ignoring it.

How much more would it be to "upgrade" yourself to a balcony room? It may be easier and at least as cost effective to do that, than to cancel RCI and go with Carnival.
